Mac/Lavry white noise

Posted by: Mabelode, King of Swords on 08 August 2009

I was playing a track on my Mac/Lavry when the music was suddenly replaced by loud and harsh white nose, bad enough to make me worry about speaker damage.

Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know what is the cause? I don't think it's due to corrupt data in the rip because I played the same track again and the problem did not repeat itself.

I have used a Mac Mini + Lavry DA10 combo for more than a year and I have never seen this problem.
I would suggest that you try to isolate the issue by playing either the MacBook or the Lavry one at a time to see which one is faulty.

Steve,

I have been using Lavry for 18 mo, and macbook for 11 mo. I have not heard the problem you describe.

The Mac/Lavry combination has proven to be robust to input signal loss. I have become careless about just closing the lid, putting macbook to sleep - even with volume turned up. No problems or unpleasant sounds.

Has this been a repeatable problem? Surely this is a problem to be avoided!

I've had this when you put a non-stereo feed into a DAC.

I'd just check the input and reboot. Some DACs can do this when they think there's a signal but non or an erronious one is there.

The sound of 5.1 into a pcm feed is not like white noise, it is most disconcerting.

I get the same from pc to hagusb to dac1 and streaming to airport express, always at a song change. Files are served from a USB hard drive attached to an airport extreme base station.

Wow Eric. That is a lot of boxes just to get the tunes to your preamp. No wonder it drops out from time to time. Two Apple boxes to boot.

That's two systems, Patrick! Airport express to Adcom Dac to 52 to active Briks for one, pc to HagUSB to Benchmark to 82/hi/180/Elas in the office.

Obviously, streaming is not the main source in the main system, but with the Naim Dac, perhaps it will be.

I'm one step closer to a Mac Lavry. A friend came over to get my modem to do wifi, (he discovered the light and did some IT talk with ATT tech. Now it downloads Netflix to my Samsung DVD player. I have a Mini as second computer but stopped loading my CDs several months ago. Too many other things going on.

I don't remember where but saw a reference to Wavelength DAC, they have 3, Brick being least costly at about $1700. Higher ones also include up to bluray specs. Any one have experience with them. Art Dudley wrote about it and I saw the website, but only heard the Mac mini and Lavry 10. Quite wonderful, but that was thru an active Naim system.

I couldn't get a handle on the iPod, it kept spinning past what I wanted.... practice makes perfect. My bank account says NO MORE Spending after doing wood floor refinishing and buying carpets.

There is always the Christmas/BD splurge and no WAF. I am a Capricorn, set my sights and focus, until then I drive myself crazy researching.

The carpets are really wonderful Calvin Klein is DA Man! Well worth a black box.
