Classical piano CD's

Posted by: bdnyc on 07 February 2002

Here are some recent releases that have been getting nice coverage, at least in the US audio press, that I'de like to endorse. One is a brand new recording of the sacrosanct "Goldberg Variations" of Bach, played brillantly by Murray Perahia. This release is on Sony Classical SK-89243. This recording is much more harmonically rich than the famous Glenn Gould recording from the 50's, at least on CD. Strongly recommended.

The older release is "Richter reDiscovered" taken from stereo master tapes from a performance at Carnegie Hall on 12/26/1960. His program included Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Prokofiev, Haydn, and Debussy. This CD is on RCA Red Seal:
09026-63844-2.

These are both CD's of music to get lost in. Any similar recommendations would be welcomed from those already familiar with the world of classical piano.

controlled hysteria

Well, how recent are we talking?

One CD that has stayed close to the CDplayer for over a year now is Arcadi Volodos Carnegie Hall recital, recorded in late 1998. It's on SONY. It's got the best interpretation of Schumann's late Bunte Blatter, and great little miniatures by Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Scriabin.

Then there's the Janacek disc by Andras Schiff on ECM New Series. I talked about this before. It's got the On an overgrown path and the piano sonata 1.X.1905.

Contemporary music: the Geyorgy Ligeti Etudes performed by Pierre-Laurent Aimard on Sony

and, finally, on the Schoenberg Piano concerto disc by Mitsuko Uchida (wth the Cleveland and Boulez on Philips) there's also the opus 11 and 19 solo pieces, plus the Berg sonata (played with real controlled hysteria) and the Webern op 24.

May I add that I have the Perahia Goldberg Varations, too, and that after a while I went back to a straight harpsichord recording? Maybe it's a continental thing. roll eyes
