What are your favourite 2 tracks,
Alan

Bent is well worth getting. A nice mix of different styles. The first album "Programmed to Love" is also good. Hard to describe as a number of different tunes on offer from electronic to vocals. Quite chilled really. If you like the Beta Band then you'll like Bent.

Them[selves] - Them (CD only reissue)

Wow, I can see why heads have been begging anticon to reissue this. It absolutely rocks. It's got Jel firing on all cylinders, plus Dose spitting complex rhymes. Whereas Hemispheres rocked, but lacked the fluency that makes cLOUDDEAD so good, and cLOUDDEAD left you stunned, but occasionally loses the plot entirely, this has it all. It is up there with Bottle of Human and Vertex. Grab it before this run sells out.

I am glad I got The No Music before this, 'cos I can now see why some people's expectations weren't met.

On vinyl

Odd Nosdam - No More Wig For Ohio
This is one for anyone who likes messed up instrumental hip hop. Actually, even if the only hip hop you ever liked was 3ft High and Rising, this one is for you. It's got elements of the usual Odd Nosdam production, but it's way better focussed that say THE SPLIT EP!. It's packed full of jarring basslines, and tight beats, but overlayed with what sounds like weird 50's US sitcom dialogue, childrens rhymes, broken pianos, and rich horns. Way tighter than some of the more off-beat anticon product.

I wonder which mainstream mag will make the crass 'Entroducing' comparison first.

Mr Lif - I Phantom

The Ethiopians - The World Goes Ska

Just got the Gave Gahan Cd 'Paper Monsters'. There are some links back to Depeche Mode (Doesn't bother me as I'm a fan anyway), but it stands up well in its own right.

Correction,

I listened to some of the deep / tribal techno and new trance stuff in the shop, to see if it was to my taste.

I fact I didn't buy a Danni Mingoue bootleg vinyl because it was not up to the usual high standard of her releases/

Today :

Various Artists - Yes New York - A complilation of the New New York Scene, the title an abvious play on the old 'No New York' album. Includes tracks by Rapture, Le Tigre, Strokes etc.

Various Artists - 21st Century Drum 'n' Bass 3 - 3 mixed CDs of some of my favoutite D&B artists - Total Science, Ed Rush, Technical Itch, Bad Company. I don't usually like mixed CDs, prefering the tracks as the orginals intended, but it can work well for this genre. To be listened to in the car.

New Vinyl*

-The Paybacks: Knock Loud. Driving, guitar-heavy Detroit garage-rock, with a vague White Stripes feel.

-The Mars Volta: Tremulant. Experimental indie-rock with a slightly spacey, atmospheric feel. Recommended.

-The New Pornographers: Electric Version. Continues the fine work of Mass Romantic, although perhaps a bit less polished, which isn't a bad thing.

-Drive Like Jehu: s/t. A terrific balls-to-the-wall hardcore album.

-Neko Case: Canadian Amp. Very spare, and not quite what I expected, but quite nice.

-Amalgamated Sons of Rest: s/t. Boring. Given the talent involved (Will Oldham and Jason Molina, among others), this should have been much, much better.

-And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead: Elena's Tomb. I think this is quite good and makes me hopeful that Source Tags and Codes was no fluke.

-Prefuse 73: One Word Extinguisher. (Thanks to Mekon for the reommendation.)

-Johnny Thunders: Live at the Lyceum. Earmark Reissue. Alone worth it for the insults hurled at the audience ("You people are so f*cking boring. Why don't you go take a drug or something. Anything")

-International Noise Conspiracy: Survival Sickness.
-Billy Bragg and Wilco: Mermaid Avenue.
-The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. Get Back Reissue.
-The Hives: Barely Legal.
-The Delgados: Hate
-The Who: Who's Next plus 12.
-Clinic: Internal Wrangler.
-Bedhead: What Fun Life Was.
-Iggy Pop: New Values. Sundazed reissue.
-Swirlies: What to do about them.
-Slint: Tweez
-Blur: Think Tank
-Oneida/Liars: Atheists Reconsider.
-System of a Down: Toxicity.
-Television: The Blow Up. Roir reissue.
-Unwound: A Single History.
-Unwound: New Plastic Ideas.
-The Notwist: Neon Golden.
-Nation of Ulysses: Embassy Tapes.
-Moby Grape: s/t
-Love: Forever Changes. Sundazed Reissue
-Minutemen: What Makes a Man Start Fires?
-Husker Du: New Day Rising
-Husker Du: Zen Arcade
-Minutemen: Double Nickels on the Dime.
-Black Flag: Nervous Breakdown
-Black Flag: Damaged
-Black Flag: In My Head
-Minutemen: 3-Way Tie for Last
-Bad Brains: I against I
-Descendents: All
-Descendents: Milo Goes to College
-Soundgarden: Ultramega OK

And on seedy:

-The Exploding Hearts: Guitar Romantic. Worth checking out if you like the Buzzcocks.

-Swirlies: Cats of the Wild Volume Two.

-Red House Painters: Down Colorful Hill. (Thanks Matthew R. for the recommendation)

-Gillian Welch: Revival. About 1/2 of what Revelator was, unfortunately.

-Arvo Part: De Profundis, Theatre of Voices, Paul Hiller. A collection of his choral pieces.

-Gyorgy Ligeti: String Quartets and Duets. Arditti Str. Quartet. Ligeti's two quartets are very similar to the middle-period Bartok quartets (2 and 3, especially). This is, of course, a mark in their favor; this is some really rich stuff.

-Sofia Gubaidulina: The Canticle of the Sun. LSO with Rostropovich, Pahud, and others. A really fantastic Penderecki- and even Bartok-inspired work for chorus, piano, and orchestra. My best find this year.

-Magnus Lindberg: Corrente II/ Arena. Finnish RSO. These are experimental and complex, single-movement pieces; harmonic if not necessarily lyrical.

*Please note that I am NOT trying to be a pale imitation of David Slater here, but am rather replacing a lot of my old, illegally copied cassette recordings with new vinyl where possible. Speaking of which, many of the SST titles are still available from www.sstsuperstore.com for $8.50 per LP ($11 for doubles). This is a great way, IMO, to get some of the best of 80's indie rock (Husker Du, Minutemen, Black Flag, Descendents, etc.) for cheap.

Cheers,
Eric

Today, Thursday, yes Thursday 5th.

METALLICA - ST. ANGER

The angry boys of summer are back, four days early, now for a tour.So far, nice and angry, great bass playing, but the drums sound a little 'dry', almost a Helmet type sound.

Any one see them at the Download festival ?

Still no 'Master of...' or ' Justice...' though.
