We were working on a track for Hugh Hopper yesterday - it was samples of Mike Ratlidge, Elton Dean, Robert Wyatt, Fuzz bass, John Marshall and others along with electronoica and audio manipulation. Even though it sounded very contemporary, the urge I had to add some to add fuzzed organ was acute.
I played at a gig with Hugh recently - he's still a hot player!

Jim-Carl is actually Karl now I look carefully. Nothing to do with Soft Machine. I'm afraid, its an orchestral/choral work my wife wanted having heard on Classic FM.

Last CD Bought 2 days ago Vanessa Carlton - Be Not Nobody. Excellent album it's got a bit of everything rock pop and blues, her voice is quite enchanting reminds me of a young Suzanne Vega well worth a listen and should get you hooked. Best tracks Ordinary Day and A Thousand Miles

Despite my best efforts to avoid buying anything for a while, I've had a couple of binges recently. Yesterday's £50 went on:
Jakatta "Visions"
Joni Mitchell "Travelogue" - utterly wonderful, it's been on the 'must buy' list since Fred Simon gave it the thumbs up and it has not disappointed on first listen.
Dennis Chambers "Outbreak" - tight, impossibly funky, polyrythmic drumming mixed with John Scofield, the Brecker brothers, Will Lee,Gary Willis et al.

Yes, he especially does Chestnut, as only he can.

Just returned from the shops with
Jerry Cantrell - Degradation Trip, l.e. double
Stone Gossard - Bayleaf
Zwan - Mary Star Of The Sea, promo
Zwan, a return to form for Billy Corgan. Like earlier Pumpkins, with less of the 'METAL' of later releases.
'Then let's head on down into that cellar and carve ourselves a witch.'

Vin Garbutt, Ian I have not seen or heard him for ages. The only stuff of his I have are Eston California and Tossin a Wobbler which I got on vinyl in the late 70's early 80's.
I saw him live loads of times - funny man and a great song writer.
cheers

I'd like to know more of your impressions of Zwan. I really like the Pumpkins first album, Gish - probably to the extent that I've never enjoyed the subsequent albums as much as I should.
So, how does the Zwan album compare to Gish?
Thanks
Gavin

_Graham Nash_:" Songs for Beginners" - Another old favorite redone by Classic Records. This one is an awesome remix, much better than the earlier Canadian and British versions that I have. When Classic gets it right, wow!
Songs for Beginners is one of my favorite records. I'm not familiar with the Classic reissue ... is it actually a remix, as you say, or is it a remastering?

I am patiently awaiting the delivery of: Stan Getz & The Oscar Peterson Trio (CD).
Gavin:
I bought the Zwan disc last week and I have not been able to get into it yet. It might take a few listens.

As I understand it, it is actually both a remix and a remastering. Graham Nash worked with the people at Classic on this project. He felt he could improve on the original and bring out elements of the music lost in the first mix. This record is incredible. Check out the Classic Records website for more details. Thanks, Mike. I wonder if there is/will be a CD release of the remix/remaster ... alas, I have no turntable.

I bought the origional from my local trendy vinyl shop in LA called Amoeba. $3, wow what a deal. But somehow I miss the other two Crosby and Stills. It sounds incomplete without them at his side. Shows a lot about their music tho.

Just bought Bob Dylan - "The Times They Are A-Changin" on the Sundazed label.
They have analogue mastered this from the original mono tapes.
It sounds wonderful.

This weekend I discovered Didier Squiban. His album "Moléne", part of a trilogy, is a real jewel. Worth to give it a try!

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Now I'm not a Jazz fan so didn't know what to expect, but I do like a lot of what's on the Naim Sampler 3(?) disc (Fred Simon, Thea Gilmore etc). But this I just don't like, it's like listening to a teenager doing their scales practice (OK a good teenager) but there's no tunes, nothing remotely memorable (though Blue on Green? has got plenty of feeling). I don't think I'll bother with any more Jazz!
Grand Drive - True Love and High Adventure
Superb - see my other thread.
SUM41 - Does this look infected.
Great straight ahead rock music, a bit samey maybe but good tunes, high energy rock, short songs.
Beck - Sea Change
I really liked this a lot the first few listens, the 2 two tracks that sound like Nick Drake are excellent and the sound is very good (HDCD). I've found it's lost a bit of its interest after about 5-6 listens though. Pretty good though, and much preferable to Odelay (IMO).

Last 2albums bought:
CD: Sor and Giuliani, Davis Starobin playing guitar.
LP: By coincidence, bought on the same day, also a guitar recording. The grand old master Segovia "on stage" playing Bach, Haendel, Scarlatti, Purcell, Cassado and Duarte. Bought the LP second hand and is of excellent quality.
I have no favorite tracks.
Regards, Arno

Sounds very good.

Re Solomon Burke
This is my last purchase also. Whilst I agree about the sound quality, I think it needed a little more variation in tempo. I would describe it as "Blues" rather than "Soul", as described on the cover. Recommended overall though.

Steve,
I agree. It would be better if it changed a little throughout the 4 sides, but the overall quality of recording/mastering and pressing makes it an excellent listen.
It just sounds so good, it's what having a good system is all about.
