From E-Bay:

OffBeat - The Red Hot Remixes

features:

Laika remixed by Meat Beat Manifesto
DJ Krush remixed by DJ Spooky
DJ Krazy remixed by Seba & Lotek
Meat Beat Manifesto remixed by Skylab

Dozy, I am rediscovering Hawkwind again, after giving them up after 'Levitation' and rejoinging them at Solstice remixes.

Can you (or anyone) recommend the best bits of the period in between?

Mmm - post Levitation, there are a number of good ones, a number of indifferent ones and a number to avoid.

I would recommend:

From the studio:

Xenon Codex
Space Bandits
Alien 4 (difficult to get hold of)
Distant Horizons (difficult to get hold of)

I haven't heard Spacebrock yet so can't comment on that.

Live recordings:

Canterbury
Astoria - Yule Party
Nottingham 1990
Business Trip Live
Live Chronicles
Stonehenge - Do Not Panic

Possibly:

Choose Your Masques
Zones

Avoid:

In Your Area

Given your taste for things electronic me thinks you will like Distant Horizons and Alien 4 in particular.

My thoughts, and I could be totally wrong.

Cheers

Mike

Kokon To Zai (combined fashion boutique and record shop, thin staff, weird and expensive)
Trax (UK and euro techno)
Rough Trade (Broad expanse of modern music)

And the usual Selectadisc, Record & Tape Exchange, Reckless & HMV

Chocci's Chewns seems to have shut down, and I didn't get to Eukatech.

Alex - Wobble, you were right about the new album being '5 Beat' - I will now need to track in down on Saturday during the weekend shop.

I will report on the Mojave 3 in due course.

I have been into Plastic Fantastic in the past, but not found much on the more offbeat/weird stuff. Perhaps it is time to give them another try!

Ludwig - The vinyl Filth Pig doesn't have the 'Jesus built my Hotrod' track - I have that on a seperate 12" single. It might have been on the CD?

ITC - Severed Heads - Clifford Darling, Please Don't Live In The Past

Kevin,
Would I like the Kings of Leon?

I dunno. It's not exactly cutting-edge, but still very enjoyable guitar rock. I guess if you liked things like the Srokes, BRMC, etc etc you might.

Jet - Get Born
Sort of like Free, with a bit of Rolling Stones, a hint of AC/DC etc. This probably sounds stupid but they sound very "natural", almost as if this record was recorded in 1970 and lost for 33 years....

On CD:

Keith, Candice Marie, Ray, Honky & Finger: Nuts In May (odd bootleg of clips of dialogue from Mike Leigh's classic TV play interspersed with electronics. Don't ask me what it's like, haven't heard it yet!)

Kraftwerk: Hutter/Sinker 91

Kevin,

Have you seen sight of the new Bartos album?

DS
Posted on: 27 September 2003 by Kevin-W
David

No. Funnily enough I was thinking about it this morning, but I haven't seen a review of it or anything.

BTW - Quite a good article on Kraftwerk in this month's RECORD COLLECTOR magazine – I didn't know my stuff was worth that much!

Today's buys:

On vinyl

Philip Glass - Einstein On The Beach (CBS Masterworks 4-LP box set)

On CD

Barry White - Just For You (4-CD box set)

Eric,
Let me know how you get on with that stuff [Midival Punditz s/t, Karsh Kale, "Liberation", OTT, "Blumenkraft"] (for good or ill). I do sometimes wonder whether I'm talking to myself or if my taste in music is utterly off-whack!

O.k. Nick,
Midival Punditz is very enjoyable and my favorite of the three. It does a great job integrating the various cultural influences in a seamless way. Hard to imagine anyone not liking this.

Karsh Kale is also v. good. It seems a bit more tame and less adventuresome than the Punditz, though it's similar in a lot of ways, obviously.

The OTT and I got off on the wrong foot together. The opening track was not my cup of tea, especially with the Buddhist four truths (or whatever) overdubbed. It seemed contrived and reminded me a bit too much of those "relaxation" channels you sometimes hear on long international flights ("You feel completely relaxed. Your body is sinking into your seat. You feel your higher cognitive functions slipping away into nothingness. Let them go.") Anyway, as the album progresses things get steadily better, until by the last track it's quite fun and bouncing along happily. Now if only they had started there.... .

All three sound great on my 'Briks, btw.

Thanks for the recs.
