What's the last al*** you have bought?

Just wondering what musical tastes are catered for, also was it a cd or vinyl?
What are your favourite 2 tracks,
Alan

Great list Bhoyo. I'd love to see what you make of Olias of Sunhillow. I dug out the vinyl a while ago and had one of those "Oh my God - and I used to actually like this?? moments.
Argus still works for me. I bought Taking Tiger Mountain a couple of weeks ago too, and that is great. I take it you already have Brilliant Trees?
Posted on: 06 October 2003 by Bhoyo
Rasher:
Yes, I have Brilliant Trees. My favourite is Secrets Of The Beehive.
I can't actually play any of these new purchases yet - the LP12 is at the doctor getting serviced, Cirkussed and generally upgraded.
And I forgot one:
Tangerine Dream: Alpha Centauri
I really wanted some Can on vinyl. This is nothing like Can, of course. Except it's German.

MC 900ft Jesus - But if you go..
[undiscovered release from 'The greatest white rapper ever]'

David

By the weirdest coincidence I was listening to MC 900 Ft Jesus' brilliant first album (vinyl LP) Hell With The Lid Off on Wednesday night. I absolutely agree with you about him being the best white rapper ever. Ive got some 12" and CD singles, plus the second album on CD.

What's But If You Go... like? When did it come out/what is it etc?

Kevin
Posted on: 10 October 2003 by Mekon
Bloody hell, that is a blast from the past. Ihave a handful of MC 900ft Jesus things (Killer Inside me, Welcome to my dream, I am going straight to heaven).

I hate to tell you, I think you two might be alone in thinking him the greatest white rapper ever. I don't know any hip hop heads who remember him. My recollection is that it was the Meat beat Manifesto remix that brought him attention. Certainly, it was us indie types at school that liked him, rather than Public Enemy fans.

Still, if you like his style, there is something about his delivery that reminds me of Buck65, particularly on Man Overboard (recently rereleased on Warner, so easy to get). When I first heard it, I was convinced that I'd found a fellow MC900Ft fan. I got to know a someone who works with Buck, and asked if they liked his stuff, but sadly they'd never heard of him.

Anyhoot on vinyl:

V/A - Funk Spectrum II

Mekon, Kevin,

"But if you go..." is a CDS with the following tracks.

But if you go (radio edit)
Primo
But if you go (Short edit)
Essex Mayhem
But if you go (Album version)

it is on American Recordings 74321 25796-2

The orginal was on the album 'One Step ahead of the Spider' It is a less abrasive than usual story telling song, with a nice bass loop and chk-chk-chk guitar riff and a flute solo running through it.

I wonder what happened to DJ Zero ? The early works like 'Too Bad' and other were really good and different. Are there any DJ Zero collaborations with anyone else?

The MBM involvement was good as well. At the time there was a good deal of cross fertilisation betweeen Consolidated, MBM, MC 900 ft Jesus, Orbital, PWOG, Plastikman and DHS all remixing each other's records. You may have noticed in a previous purchases posting, that there is a MBM Storm the Studio remix CD, with DHS and Merzbow messing it up.

Mekon, I will follow up the Buck 65, I don't have any of his work. I do like Public Enemy as well, and followed them for several years.

But.... who is a better white rapper?

DS

ITC - MC 900ft Jesus - But if you go...
Posted on: 10 October 2003 by Kevin-W
"Too Bad" - what a scorcher. And "Shut Up", "Truth Is Out Of Style", etc.

Agree with yo David - Mekon didn't name any better WHITE rappers.

No,

the local party shop, the bunting emporium.

Posted on: 11 October 2003 by Mekon
David, IMO there are a whole load of white rappers more gifted than MC900Ft Jesus. Five off the top of my head...

Sage Francis
Odd Nosdam
Aesop Rock
Adeem
Rob Sonic

Also, I would say that Sixtoo has done some great stuff lately, and his latest, Antagonist Survival Kit, might be right up your street (moreso than Buck). It's on Vertical Form, and Boomkat have it.

Mekon,

Keep grooving to Wobbble!

On the hop-hop front, any particular tracks / albums from those you recommend?

I know from you taste that you will appreciate the more cerebral, intelligent end of hip-hop / rap. I think I will tread gently along this path, as I have found little in the gansta' yo' bitch mofucka' hip-hop genre to attract me - Perhaps I struggle to emhasise with young urban street crime hustlers in N.Y. whilst pottering about the country lanes looking at the cows and sheep near where I live ?

DS

OTD - Tori Amos - Professional Widow
Posted on: 12 October 2003 by andy c
Paul Oakenfold - The Great Wall.

Typical Oakey stuff but if you are into shiny trance then this is very good. CD 2 is dirtier but both are above normal compilation rubbish...
Posted on: 13 October 2003 by Mekon
Hi David

I can recommend V/A - Lexoleum Trilogy (on Lex) as a great intro 'indie/undie/prog/not' hip hop comp. However, of those guys:

Sage Francis - Personal Journals. The production isn't groundbreaking, but he an incredible emcee. Listen to Crack Pipes or Climb Trees.

(I wasn't thinking straight the other day, and confused two of anticon's rappers, I meant Dose One, not Odd Nosdam, but the both are on...) cLOUDEAD - cLOUDDEAD {listen to Apt. A),if you don't have it already, but if you do then Themselves - The No Music (listen to Good People Check) would be a good purchase. Odd Nosdam is well worth a listen, though. His collab with Why?, called The Split EP! is worth tracking down.

I haven't heard his new album yet, but Aesop Rock - Float is a classic. Listen to Drawbridge.

Sonic Sum (Rob Sonic's band) - The Sanity Annex was ignored when it came it, but Films will be released later in the year, and should get more press. Listen to Himbro St.

As for Adeem, you could try to get hold of the Dorian Three album, but I have had little luck.

BTW, if you like Buck 65, you will definitely like Sixtoo. They used to work together as The Sebutones. Check out Stigg of the Dump & The Sebutones - Live At The Veglia Lounge if you get a chance, or Maid of Gold - Villain Accelerate, which is more Warp-y.

Dom:

Silver Appples - I have 2 LPs by them, the latest one is a re-issue and was purchased at Plastic Factory in Coporation Street, Birmingham.

This shop has a wide selection of vinyl and some CDs, and is strong on pyschedelic, hippy and krautrock, but also does punk, new wave, hard rock and other stuff.

Not cheap (All the ones I bought seemed to cost £20 - £30), but you don't see this stuff very often.

The owner is very friendly, and loves to chat about krautrock history and other esoteric topics, an has put me on to a few groups I have followed up, like the modern english krautrock group (??) Klangstorm.

I keep my list of what I have and what I want in an .xls file on my pda. I think some of the newer mobiles (eg Sony/Ericsson P800) have .xls viewers too.
