Finally hit the used Vinyl shops while in Vancouver inbetween flights:

All on Vinyl:

The English Beat - Special Beat Service
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking (Brand spanking new and in the wrapper)
Madness - One step beyond .....
Wall of Voodoo - The ugly Americans in Australia*
Wall of Voodoo - Call of the West

All from a shop called Noise LPs. Has a good selection of brand new vinyl releases. Located about 3 stores away from the local Naim dealer, Hi-Fi Centre, who are a great bunch of guys. If I was on the West Coast, no doubt I would be dealing with them, had an enjoyable couple of hours in the store and listening to the new 5i gear.

Also, I want to give the CD Warehouse in Sunnyvale CA a plug. This is a great store and hopefully this plug will result in more biz for them and not fewer CDs for me! A vital sanity restorer after work on many an evening.

Especially since one of the staff loaned me a personal copy of The Dining Rooms Tre to have a listen. Excellent chill-out/lounge which is the first I've heard from them. Every track is good on this CD.

As you know, I like to keep up with the latest sounds......

Here are my last four, all apparently from 2002..

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
A New York band drawing their influences from Joy Division and VU. You could imagine Warhol taking a big interest in these guys and there is a taint of "media darlings/art rockers" abou them. Nevertheless, there is space for this type of band and I think they're pretty impressive. The music has that stripped down feel, and vocals that occasionally manage to detach themselves from the beat. A really great debut album, and pretty cool live I would imagine.

    Three more that I heard via the Bob Harris show;

    Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Talked about a lot on the forum, by Alex I think, and when I finally heard "Trains" I was really impressed. The album as a whole is taking more time to burn in than normal, but so far I like it.
(it's not really "Prog" though, is it ?)

Grand Drive - See the Morning In
THis has been previously mentioned, by Greeny I think, and is a really beautiful slice of alt.country americana - which is ironic as they hail from London...
I'm really enjoying this album, laid back, plaintive vocals and great playing - highly recommended.

Josh Ritter -Golden Age of Radio

More alt.country (is alt.country the new black?) This guy is a younger Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist and is currently on tour in the UK with Joan Baez (I think). The guy sings with his tongue in cheek and plays really well. A sticker on the CD says "..captures the sparse elegance of Nick Drake, the gritty passion of Neil Young, and the melodic charm of Cat Stevens", but I think that might be a bit of a stretch. Worth a listen if you see it.

    Regards,

Norah must be part of your domestic diplomacy arsenal- keeping the other half happy and all that. A few married buddies describe Norah CD's that way, but I don't believe them one bit. I just know they sing her songs while weightlifting, working on the car, mowing the lawn, etc. Wink
