Recently, here in Sweden, the upper three spots on the charts have been a collection with Stevie Wonder, a collection with Aretha Franklin and Nora Jones. Not exactly what teenagers are supposed to buy!

I'm not a teenager so Stevie W and Aretha F fitted perfectly as I have very little with them.

Prefer Arethas music, it's more "go in to the studio, nu messing around, just sing your heart out"

I've not heard of this. Is it an import? if not what's on it, I'm a bit of a queen fan, is it live stuff or what??

Thanks

Arrived yesterday:

Lambchop - Nixon
Peter Gabriel - Up
Scott Walker - TILT

I love Lambchop's "is a woman", but Nixon is initially less impressive. Only played it once, hopefully it will burn in.

Peter Gabriel's "Up" sounds ok but will hold judgement until I've played it a few more times.

Scott Walker - TILT. This was a recommendation from Messrs Dale, Dever and Winston. Thank you very much. It's superb. Quite a modern sound, almost operatic in parts, reminded me a little of Laurie Anderson. I bought this sooner than I wanted because I have the feeling that it is going out of print....

Prefer Aretha's music to whose? Norah's? Dig it or not as you please, but that's exactly how she made her album.

Where did you get the Kerouac Cd's from ?
Interested in getting hold of some of his readings on CD. any you can especially recommend?

Nick,

It was a tatty remaindered item from HMV in Reading - The www.hmc.co.uk site sells a box set for £55. www.amazon.com have them for $45. I understand there is also a DVD ' The King of the Beats' (No, not the Run DMC or the Mantronix version)

I would try Selectadisc / Rough trade ?

I have read some of his books (On the Road, natch), and my rekindled interest sparks from listening to a couple of WS Burroughs audio books whilst driving around. I like listening to Radio 4 in the car, as well as music, and spoken word is an interesting change.

Mekon -

And do say make think - very chilled, but strangely difficult to hum.

Husker Du - good stuff, although for me Land Speed Record / Zen Arcade saw them climb the hill, New Dawn / Candy Apple Grey saw them come down off their peak

DS

ITC Danni Minogue - I begin to Wonder

Cheers, I'll prolly get my missus Zen Arcade next. She's reliving her indie-kid college days, although, primary-school days is nearer the mark. She would have been 9 when New Day Rising came out Smile.

I meant to Stevies!

Another interesting thing with these two collections is that they clearly shows how sound quality on "popular" recordings have declined through the years.

David,
Always had a soft spot for Kerouac. I've just read his books up until now; never heard his voice. Going to order some stuff from Djangos.com and Amazon. Don't know how much you've read but my favourite so far is 'Dharma Bums'. I've got Burroughs's 'spare ass annie' on CD and really enjoy listening to his readings; THAT voice is fabulous.

As an aside though my favourite spoken word recording by far is Laurie Anderson's 'stories from the nerve bible'... Completely mesmirising storytelling. Recommended!

All of half an hour ago I bought;

One Kill Wonder - The Haunted
When Fire Rains down from the Sky, Mankind will reap as it has sown - Anaal Nathrakh (bit of a mouthful that one...)
So Long Astoria - The Ataris

Public Face, Private Face - Quiet City.

I know little about this, but am intrigued by the Blue Nile connection.

Today's acquisitions :

Coil - Live Four Prague, Vienna, Autumn 2002
Anthony Rother - Elixir of Life Parts 1 - 10

Other matters

I really rate WSB reading his own books. It is a shame that he didn't do my favourites like the Place of Dead Roads and the Western Lands (or at least as far as I know)

Laurie Anderson - I have focussed on the music albums, United States Live etc. I will look into her spoken word. What I would like is a DVD of United States to get the visual impact as well.
