Kevin-W,
Since you like Can you would probably like Calla, which is a contemporary act from NYC with a lot of Can-like features, IMO. There is a 12" LP they did with the Walkmen (called "Walkmen/Calla") where they do a Can tune. Calla also has a few albums of their own; "Scavengers" is the only one I have. It's quite good.

Nick L,
I will give a report on the Quine / Maher at the weekend.
The backlog pile for listening is getting deeper and deeper.
I want to get through the stuff I got sent from Sonic Groove in NY, as these were quite difficult to find, and were a real find.
Did you get the newer Richard Hell LP recently?
DS

I meant 'Destiny Street' by Richard Hell
It might have been a re-issue, but I didn't see it in the 70's.
Blank Generation - what an intro !

Hi Fred, sorry I was not able to get back to you sooner. The three CD’s (I don’t have any idea on how to use the quotes) I bought based on this thread:
Bill Evans – Blue in Green
Alison Krauss & Union Station – Every Time You Say Goodbye
Anouar Brahem – Le pas du chat noir
The selections are all excellent. It was one of those days where everything I bought was good. Thanks to everybody for the ideas.
I took the vinyl plunge! I bought a Linn LP12 this week. I will pick it up hopefully on Saturday. In anticipation of listening to vinyl I bought:
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Moanin’
Cannonball Adderly – Somethin’ Else
Cannonball Adderly – Know What I Mean?
Miles Davis – ‘Round About Midnight
Miles Davis - Miles Davis and the Lighthouse All Stars
Bill Evans Trio – Portrait in Jazz
The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Time Out
The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Jazz at Oberlin
Dizzy Gillespie & Stan Getz – Diz and Stan
Oscar Peterson & Dizzy Gillespie – Same
Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane – Same
I am trying to find Kenny Burrell – Midnight Blue, and The Oscar Peterson Trio – Night Train on vinyl. Hopefully the Jazz Record Mart will have them in stock next week.

Sorry, cannot join the pseuds corner and give an enormous list of obscure bands-bet most don't exist anyway, bet you are just trying (and failing) to impress the rest of us-do you have the time to listen to so many purchases.
Me,more mundane!!!
Rory Gallagher-Wheels, unreleased acoustic, lots of contributions by others, almosta folky album!
Alex Harvey-Consider The Situation, 2Cd look back of his career from his Soul Band, early 60's, through Hair to the SAHB

angerine Dream: Electronic Meditation

What is Rory Gallagher Group? Dunno whats thats all about?
Kevin, as always, our tastes converge more than diverge -
Popol Vuh is a big listen. The Soundtracks box sets are worth tracking down.
Tangerine Dream - Electronic Meditation includes Conrad Schinztler in the band, he who made the best album ever made in the history of mankind, Intermedia Life Action
ACR - Knife slits water - one of their best
This Heat - Saigon off Deceit is memnorable. Have you got "Health & Efficency" a real precusor to hypnotic drone rock.
TG - well there you go - so good I bought it three times by accident.
DS
OTD - Oliver Bondzio - Portrait of a Masterpiece.

On CD - £6 for both from Cash Convertors
Greatest Hits - The Police
The final cut - Pink Floyd (original 1983 issue)
On vinyl (Oxfam)
Making Movies - Dire Straits
Piano in the dark (12 inch) - Brenda Russell (uh oh!)
Might go back and buy Strangeways here we come by The Smiths (on Rough Trade) but £4.99 seems a bit steep for Oxfam, especially since BOTH my turntables are out of comission right now

Dinosaur Jr - Bug
A Classic
Renee Fleming - Strauss Heroines.
Glorious singing, luscious music. Just seen 'Der Rosenkavalier' at the ENO and needed an instant Strauss fix. This certainly hit the spot.
Various - Studio One Scorchers
Great selection of reggae instrumentals. Worth buying for the incredible 'Shockers Rock' alone
Calexico - Feast of Wire.
As recommended elsewhere. This one keeps growing on me.
Various - Verve Remixed
Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday given a respray by the likes of Masters at Work, Dorfmeister and MJ Cole. Shamelessly aimed at ageing has-beens who are too scared for anything too cutting-edge. I love it.

djc - If by 'Archway person' you mean you are a person in archway, perhaps you can tell me what the shop Sound 323 is like?
I am always intrigued by their adverts in The Wire. It seems that they stock the obscure pretentious drivel that i love.
DS
ITC - The Stars of the Lid - The tired sounds of the Stars of the Lid (very laidback, late night music)

David,
I do indeed live in Archway (Jewel of North London, for those who don't know it). Sound 323 is in Highgate, and we Archway people never go there.
Seriously, thanks for the tip, can you believe I didn't even know of the existence of what looks like a fine shop just up the road. I'll report back asap.
Bonus point for the person who knows who archway people really are.

djc,
one of the places I lived in London was Highgate. My local was the Shepherds, on Archway Road. I lived in the same road at Paul Young, but never met him.
I have fond memories of driving around after work trying to find a parking space, sometime I even found one in my own street!
Does Jim Whiting still have all those partially completed automata above the first shop in the row opposite Highgate Station ?
