Just wondering what musical tastes are catered for, also was it a cd or vinyl?
What are your favourite 2 tracks,

Ah ha! I've heard of Dannii Minogue!

My comment in the other thread wasn't a dig. I'm actually envious that you have the time (and money) to spend on finding and listening to all the stuff you buy!

"Bonus point for the person who knows who archway people really are"

That'll be mid 90s indie-dance popsters Saint Etienne.

BTW Archway is not the Jewel of North London which is really the other end of Holloway Road.

Seagull,

[Sung in a wet English beach holiday voice)

Oh I do like to chat on the foruuum...

Yes, I do consider myself lucky to have the time, energy and resources to pursue my interests. (adopts Yorkshire accent) Mind you, it wasn't so easy when I was a poor student, with a record collection and a huge overdraft to support. Then I could only go down the record shop twice a week, but I did get staff discount - I didn;t work there, I just got staff discount.

Today I have been mostly obtaining:

(on CD)
NEW ORDER - Everything's Gone Green (6 different live versions of the title song from 1981 and 1983)

ULTRAMARINE - Live At The Powerhaus/"Every Man & Woman Is a Star" demos

David - what I'd like to know is, how do you manage to listen to everything? I buy only a fraction of what you do, and I still haven't got round to listening to half of it. Do you drivr around a lot/work from home?

Kevin,

Ahh well I listen to CDs and tapes on the way to work. On business trips around the country I listen in the car.

When at home in the study or lounge, kitchen or bedroom I have a hi-fi set to listen to.

Music is on constantly, even sometimes while I am watching the TV with the sound down.

Despite this, there are still several large piles of vinyl stacked behind the sofa to get round to.

The main factors are :

1. No kids
2. Understanding wife
3. I don't play golf, do sport or other time wasting activities.

(Adopts John Milesesque high pitched voice) "Mewwwwsiccc is my firrrst love, and it will be my larrrrrst"

The Fabulous Bud E. Luv - ' Diary Of A Loungeman ' sampler
M. M. Bosstones - ' Where Did You Go ' e.p.
Juliana Hatfield - ' gold stars 1992-2002 '

Get this; Bud E, Luv, the prince of Fr!££$n' loungeness. Yes, you guessed it, a Black Sabbath/Ozzy covers album in a lounge/swing jazz style. Not to mention the Bavarian OOomm pah pah/polka of Sweet Leaf, or the bontempi organ version of Crazy Train ( complete with fade out' Good night, everyone. We're here all week. Try the Veal special...' ). Just ignore the mariachi style cover.

' The Osbournes ' has got a lot to answer for, first Kelly, now this; but I'll hunt out the full album, just for the cheese. Now where is that Moog Cookbook.....

' We can't bury Cheryl. She's our friend. '

Yesterday :

Pankow - Walpurgisnacht
Pankow - God's Deneuve

I have been searching for Walpurisnacht for about 4 years, and my GEMM search agent found it in a shop in Italy last week. I am pleased to have this item on vinyl.

I had not known of the existence of the 'God's Deneuve' record, but the shop had this as well, so I thought I better have that too.

The next step is to track down some of thier later vinyl releases.

OTD - Dollar - The Paris Collection

David,

checked out Sound 323 yesterday. One of those places where you're not sure if they are playing a CD or the plumbing is a bit dodgy. Excellent shop.

Bonus to Matthew. He could have also mentioned that it is a song of subtle beauty...[irony]much like Archway[/irony]

Meanwhile, back on topic...

Haydn - Theresienmesse, Missa Sancti Nicolai
Pinnock/English Concert

In times like these, some Haydn optimism is greatly needed. This was a bit of an impulse buy, but the same forces’ ‘Nelson’ mass has been a much played at Archway towers. Life enhancing music.

Schubert – Lieder
Barbara Bonney/Geoffrey Parsons

Another selection of ‘hits’, recorded in 1994. Last month I heard Ms Bonney sing some of these at the Wigmore Hall. Perhaps she was having an off-night, but it sounded like her voice was starting to loose a little of it’s sheen and she was noticeably short of breath on occasions. I hope this is not the start of a decline. No such problems here, lovely singing and sensitive interpretations without over-egging things.

Various: The Shrine - Afrodigital - future sounds from the motherland Varying standard selection of Afro house/hip-hop/dub. Worth getting for a mighty Masters at Work track as it's only £5 at Fopp.

Various: Stomping at the Savoy Brilliant selection of 40's & 50's Jazz, Jump-jive and R'n'B on the eponymous label. This was an NME cassette which got played to death on many long car journeys but then lost years ago. I scored an LP version at the Record and Tape Exchange today. Like finding a long-lost friend! Jazz as in party music rather than chin-stroking and a great morale booster. Any further suggestions in this genre are very welcome.

Lee - great choices, good luck in catching up

Have you got Techno Animals' 1st LP - Ghosts?

I recommend it - Not as hip hop as the more recent stuff, but grinding industrial slowcore, nice.

Not got Ghosts, my first TA purchase was the awesome 'Re-Entry' - the first cd in particular is superb. None of their subsequent albums or spinoffs (The Bug, Ice, Curse of the Golden Vampires) has really hit the mark for me - though BotB requires further listening...

I really like the ~scape sound tho' haven't bought a great deal as yet - only the first Staedtizism comp. I must say the Wire subscription is one of the most value for money purchases I've made - the free cds are packed with great music (jazz aside). The Club Transmediale one is one of the best recent cds, together with the Staubgold and Rune Grammefon comps. Trouble is they're a temptation to spend too much on cds...

cheers

Aim's Cold water music on CD - heard them in Fabric and liked - it's pretty good for £7 from FOPP.

Oh, and a Glastonbury ticket, so no more music this month!

Good call on AIM. Sail is fantastic. The second album (Hinterland) isn't quite as good, but worth picking up IMO.

If you like AIM, Third Eye Vision by Hieroglyphics (indeed anything associated with Hiero) would be worth your money, as would any Gangstarr, so long as you find Guru's delivery to your taste. IMO, Andy Turner owes DJ Premier quite a debt.

Just picked up :-

Fairport Convention - History of..
Cat Stevens - Catch Bull at Four

Both on vinyl.

Kevin bought..

"Blaine Reininger - Broken Fingers CD"

Ah Tuxedomoon spin off spotted!

Tuxedomoon are another of my inner circle favourites - right from "New Machine" and "Half Mute" (another all time fave rave). I file their records between Throbbing Gristle and Television, as that's how important they are.

Steven Brown and Winston Tong, as well as Blaine R both have an extensive range of solo work to investigate - I'm sure you will know them.

Looking forward to the weekend. Shopping trip planned.

Sundazed and Beatrocket records have been releasing a number of 60's garage-rock/proto-punk LPs on very nice 180g vinyl (all analogue remastering, etc.). Recent buys:

Trashmen - Surfin' Bird
Sonics - Introducing the Sonics
MC5 - Kick out the Jams
Road Runners -- s/t
Kings Verses -s/t
Stooges -- Fun House
The Gonn -- The Loudest Band in Town (they mean Iowa)

I haven't fully listened to all of these yet, but so far I'm very pleased. Prices seem to be cheapest ($12.95 ea) at the labels' websites, btw (www.sundazed.com www.beatrocket.com.)
Cheers
