Now only one of them really has impressive range, but the others are instantly recognisable unlike most of the mainstream Pop offerings.

And for balance and decorum may I introduce Mr Aksel Schiøtz, performing the Aria, Il mio tesoro intanto from Mozart's Opera Don Giovanni. Those of you with a comic sense of the ridiculous and a long memory for old British Black and White films may recall that this Aria is simply murdered [as also is a whole Aristocratic family] in Kind Hearts, and Coronets.
The serial murderer of the Ducal family was the son of the tenor who did the musical murdering, and the disowned daughter of the family was the serial murder's mother...
It is a hoot!
Naturally, Mr Aksel Schiøtz is more than simply exemplary as to how it should be done. He was a curiosity among tenors, in that he was not the usual puffed up little man, but a rather kind person who always thought of others. As Gerald Moore [the great accompanist at the piano of almost every singer of note in the mid-twentieth] century noted, "He was one of only two tenors I ever worked with who did bring the subject of himself up!"

Frank Sinatra - For style and making a song his.
Al Green - The ultimate soul singer.
Tim Buckley - A truly pure voice.
Fritz Wunderlich - A fantastic tenor who actually makes a sung that is French originally or any other language for that matter still sound fantastic in German, try this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZspT2zM-w0
Giuseppe di stefano - Passion and in the early days such liquid tone

1. Peter Hammill
2. Robert Plant
3. Eddie Vedder
4. Michael Stype
5. Mark Kozelek
And the next five are right on their heels.
David Sylvian, Mark Hollis (Talk Talk), Maynard James Keenan (Tool, APC), Jeff Buckley (sad we have so little by him).
Also for such a great range, and one of the most amazing live performers Freddie Mercury, again sadly missed.

Top 50? this is male singers thread, not the female singers thread

I had trouble thinking of 5 - though I can now by using the suggestions of other forum members: Paul Rogers, Peter Hammill and Jeff Buckley for example.

BTW who is Al Green?

The Reverend Al Green, soul singer, who I know best for 'Take Me to the River'.
Good to see another Peter Hammill fan here too.
