Naim CDX and Densen B200/300 working in harmony
Posted by: Steve Toy on 10 January 2002
The upgrade path will be as follows, all being well:-
1) B300-->300XS
2) Add XPS
3) Hope that Mr Silessen brings out a B200 XS that will support a CDS2...
Otherwise, I may have to look at DNM...
4) The almighty, venerable, and breathtaking CDS2!
It's always a nice day for it Have a good one!

It's good to get back to normal.

52 or cds2 or 52 or cds2... I need to make more money.
I have GIZMO...
and I was silly enough to pay for it as well...
Seriously, when I bought the B200 at the Chester Hi-fi Show in October 2000, I was assured that the forthcoming remote would cost around £100.
Then Mr Silessen launched it at the rediculous price of £300.
Considering that I don't have a Densen CD player, I paid the price for a remote that effectively just controls that knob, as well as mute, and standby...
The FLASH remote is only ten pounds more, but seems more worth it, IMHO.
The GIZMO is rather heavy, so I could use it to fend off would-be robbers...

is the Densen stuff any good? What would Densen money have got you in a Naim...
And why didn't you?
Think the reason people drift away from the N word is because the speakers are so foul!
OK maybe unfair on the NBL which I've heard and doth seriously rocketh..
I then added a B300 power amp in biamping mode as an upgrade, and then got blown away by what the B200 pre can do.
IMHO, the B200/300 will match an 82/Hi/180 combo for PR&T, tune and finesse for less money.
The only downside is that the B200 is the only pre that Densen makes, and it isn't as good as an 82/Supercap or a 52.
I also like Densen power amps because you get 100wpc with a 500VA transformer - real power and juice for really loud music when you want it!
The B300XS has a 750 VA transformer inside which should be a good match for a 250 in terms of grunt.
I can't think of a better CD player than a Naim, though, having tried the Densen B400 for seven weeks, so it goes to show that Naim sources really can work brilliantly outside of an all-Naim system.
I would also like a pair of Allaes, eventually, as they really seem to be fantastic speakers.
The Densen amps may just be the meat in the sandwich...
I can't get on with NBLs though - too boxy and unmusical to date...

I've heard the NBL going so well it raised the hairs on the back of my neck!
No shit I can assure you. Only had that feeling once or maybe twice B4. And never with SBL's.
And only ever with a well set up LP12. Both times I've heard the NBL was with a CD player...
Freakin high praise indeed! When they get it right they Really Get It Right.
Gizmo is what my wife/reality checker calls anything I buyfor the system.

Did you ever get to hear one of these? By that I mean a proper dem as opposed to a HiFi show.

I've used a "1 for All" remote for over 10 years now. The thing can be programmed to run anything short of the Space Shuttle. Handles up to 6 components and has enough buttons that I was even able to fully control my now-defunct Yamaha surround receiver (all those surround modes).
It comes with codes for the major manufacturers components and the individual keys can be programmed if need be. If you have to custom program the keys, it can take a while. But one remote that controls the whole house for $20 USD is hard to beat.

£300 for RCA/RCA and £275 for DIN/RCA conversion is a dear price to pay for not using Naim amps!
