Guitarist Ralph Towner (who also plays a bit of piano) teams up with the highly sympathetic bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette for five of his originals on this 1978 date. The music unfolds slowly but logically, and Towner's quiet sound displays a lot of inner heat. Highlights include "Waterwheel" and the 16-minute "Batik." Well worth listening to closely, at a high volume.

1 Waterwheel Towner 9:20
2 Shades of Sutton Hoo Towner 4:34
3 Trellis Towner 8:18
4 Batik Towner 16:17
5 Green Room Towner 6:16

1978 LP ECM 1127
2005 CD Universal International 847325
2001 CD Universal/ECM 3021
2008 CD ECM 001183202

US 180g reissue. But the fidelity is a lot to be desired. ( a CD copy sounds better )

Let's hope the MOFI version is better than this.

Lots of funny goings on in this opera with a very queer bunch of 'carry-on' style characters.
But it’s all perfectly respectable really! ; )
The musik, composed by a very teenage Wolfgang, is a sheer delight, and imho a seriously underestimated opera! : )

Ewen,

I'm just playing it again, a must have IMHO. I didn't expect much but this is one of my favorite new releases so far this year.

Cheers ... Oliver

That would make a great thread - even though an impossible question.

Arrived this morning. Adobe Media Player is required to play the videos (on your computer). It's available to download/install when you pop in the CD. The videos do not play on your DVD Player.

all the blue changes video from the Bush Hall gig is excellent, so the live DVD looks promising Smile

It includes Cristy Moore which is reason enough.

steve

I rather like it!
It's another one of those grubby albums i purchased as a box-lot for a tenner (about 100 albums in all)
But it cleaned up very well and plays very nicely...
suprised me how old that music is though, or it is me! Winker

Hmmm...perhaps I'll blow the dust off my copy & give it a spin. Time for a re-evaluation I think.

Had this for years, just giving it another go. Always struck me as a bloke who was all technique and no soul
