This is nice, in a soft, jangly, breathy vocal, Americana, Grandaddy way...

Doug,

I might be tempted by their Dvorak disc on Hyperion. Do you have it?

Haim, how do you do it? I thought I had a complete Florestan library and I spent the last 15 minutes looking for this one and it turns out that I don't have it.

I have these two early trios played by Trio Fontenay though. If you love chamber music then get this but you will notice the difference between the very popular later trios (f- & e-). I quite like the g- trio but that goes without saying as it is in a minor keySmile But in general, I would highly recommend any chamber music of Dvorak (Piano Trios, Quartet, Quintet and String Quartets etc).

A very compelling reason though to pick up that CD is for the Suk "Elegie." If you're not familiar with it, it is just one of those little gems with a sentimental melody you can't get out of your head once you've heard it. In my own piano trio, it is also a joy to play and share with close friends. Very simple yet profound from a time when music was made and played mostly in the home.

The only recording I have of it is this and I really like it...

Hi Jamie,

Yes, I ordered this through her website and a signed copy came in the post. A nice touch.

Musically, this is not too much of a shift from her earlier work (this is her first studio album for 10 years!), so if you are familiar with that and enjoyed it then you won't be disappointed here. I've only played it a couple of times so far but it is a pretty solid album. Nothing startling, no real standout tracks so far but altogether very pleasant listening.

I'll be seeing her live at The Lowry in Manchester on 7th June which should be interesting.

Cheers, Mark.

James Blackshaw-Glass bead game

quote:
Blackshaw plays soulful and kaleidoscopic, ever-shifting mantra cycles of incredible beauty. Just his guitar by itself, with its swirling overtones, cascading notes, and a thousand points of light, resembles an orchestra, but with further orchestration piano, strings, wind, and vocals the music is positively cinematic and mesmerizing.
