Leonard Cohen - Joan Of Arc
Now the flames they followed joan of arc
As she came riding through the dark;
No moon to keep her armour bright,
No man to get her through this very smoky night.
She said, Im tired of the war,
I want the kind of work I had before,
A wedding dress or something white
To wear upon my swollen appetite.
Well, Im glad to hear you talk this way,
You know Ive watched you riding every day
And something in me yearns to win
Such a cold and lonesome heroine.
And who are you? she sternly spoke
To the one beneath the smoke.
Why, Im fire, he replied,
And I love your solitude, I love your pride.
Then fire, make your body cold,
Im going to give you mine to hold,
Saying this she climbed inside
To be his one, to be his only bride.
And deep into his fiery heart
He took the dust of joan of arc,
And high above the wedding guests
He hung the ashes of her wedding dress.
It was deep into his fiery heart
He took the dust of joan of arc,
And then she clearly understood
If he was fire, oh then she must be wood.
I saw her wince, I saw her cry,
I saw the glory in her eye.
Myself I long for love and light,
But must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?
Now that's good writing.
Over the years this has turned into my favorite Cohen tune. I like the Jennifer Warnes live version they included on the 20th anniversary edition of FBR.

My favourite lyric outside of Dylan Miles - Genius...also my favourite Cohen track. I love the version on Live. Wish it was on Live in London (it probably is, and I've just missed it).

It beats me why it is not on Live in London, I'm pretty sure I recall him playing it during the concert here in Sydney.

I like the new one, might have to go back and give this one a try as well - what do you think?
Their debut album blew me away, so i obviously i was looking forward to this when it was released. At the time i remember being dissapointed. BUT having not listened to either for some time i thought i would give this another go. For me it's a cracking album, i was trutting round the living to most of the album so it certainly had the desired affect on me.
The new album is out on monday here and i've pre-ordered the special addition disc. They are touring by me in August but i'm going to be out the country!

Nice start to a very lazy Sunday which I intend to spend sorting out my vinyl collection and itunes library.

quote:Brian Bromberg is one of the few bassists to master the tapping technique made famous by Stanley Jordan, sometimes sounding like three bassists at once during his often-thunderous solos. Although he was a drummer at the age of 13, the folowing year Bromberg started classical lessons on bass. He developed quickly and by the time he was 19, he was part of Stan Getz's group. Bromberg has been a valuable sidemen with many bands since including those led by Horace Silver, Monty Alexander, Dizzy Gillespie, Richie Cole, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, and Freddie Hubbard.
