Good to see Shorter on this list. Shorter is indeed very wonderful. Quite often he is and has been described by others more knowledgable than I as a colourist, however some of his early blue note records show him significantly more than that in my opinion. Night Dreamer is my favourite.

Troubadours and friends, Steve Earle could certainly say that he's walked more than a mile in a similar pair of moccasins. These covers don't add anything new or displace my affection for the originals, but a very worthy effort. I especially like the vocal treatment given to Lungs, atmospherically alluding to the suffocating affliction of many coal miners. For anyone who loves a good story in their songs.

Yes, Night Dreamer is another wonderful effort from him, and even more clearly displays the influence of John Coltrane on his playing (an impression that is enhanced by the fact that he basically uses Coltrane's band on that album). Adam's Apple is actually a sort of transition album in which he also displays (to my ears anyway) a little of the stylistic influence of the musicians around Miles Davis at the time. However, both LPs (together with Juju and Speak No Evil) are among the most treasured items in my music collection and in my view are must-have items for any serious collector of hard/post bop jazz.

Probably my favourite album this year so far. I have to confess I have slightly fallen in love with Regina Spektor just recently, but this album is musically and lyrically exciting and stimulating all done with charisma and a great sense of humour.
