Thought this was a little unusual at first, but now I really like it and think it is one of the best discs that I have bought in a while.

Thak you to Mr Lontano!

On the strength of that, I'm giving it another go. I hadn't listened to it much since buying it. Cheers!

on cd.

I love this album. The normal Cave modus operandi (that death, destruction, misery and suffering will follow you all the days of your life) is put on hold for an album of beautifully crafted songs.

Stand out tracks for me are 'God is on the house' and 'The sorrowful wife' but there isn't a duff track on the album.

Post PJ Harvey breakup, for me, this is to Cave what 'Blood on the tracks' was to Dylan. I can't imagine higher praise than that.

Immerse yourself as Cave both loses faith in love and marriage while at the same time turning to his one true constant, music, which he also fears will turn on him..."my piano crouched in the corner of the room with all its teeth bared"

Beggars Banquet @ 1988

This is one of dozens of pre-owned LP's i purchased in a job-lot about a month ago, very good value for money for acquiring vinyl but these LP's seriously need some TLC in the RCM... if you know what i mean...
Fortunately, most of this vinyl scrubs up fairly well, and this band 'The Go-Betweens' is 'okay'... But imo suffers from a slightly boring singing style with lyrics to suit, and despite some nice strumming acoustic guitar work here and there, better more imaginative drumming would perk this band up a treat, and please someone change that boring bass guitarist too! (How on Earth did this album get six 5star reviews in Amazon?) Roll Eyes

Selected tracks...

Battle of Evermore
Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
Going to California
Gallows Pole

I only wish I had seen these guys live (and The Doors).

PS_Listening to Led Zep always reminds me of that wonderful advice given by
Mary Schmich and turned into a song by Baz Luhrmann.

Thelonious Monk Septet 'Monk's Music'. I always say this, but it really is one of my very favourite album covers.

On which topic, I found this wonderful page of Columbia jazz albums covers:
Jazz album covers

I especially like the James/Jimmy Rushing covers.

I'm not a great fan of Basia Bulat but this is a great cover of the Sam Cooke song, gives it a great contemporary gospel feel Cool

Any chance of a photo of you sat in it, especially in a flat cap?

Maybe at one of the Naim get togethers we should have a series of photos done to recreate great album covers. I could stand in a field, back camera and say 'moo' to recreate my all time favourite cover.

Now listening to various St Vincent tracks and videos on myspace. New stuff sounds great, bit of a Polly jean harvey vibe but maybe less harsh. Claims her music is indie/concrete/Zouk which is a mix you don't catch everyday :-) Very contemporary, but with influences from cinema (she loves Badlands and Wizard of Oz), the 1950's and the vastness of some of Kate Bush's work., The Strangers and Actor out of work are glorious. Have a listen here. She could just become very big could Annie Clarke.
