Adrian (Lontano) posted this a couple of times and that inspired me to take the plunge, money well spent. Should appeal to anyone interested in jazz keyboard trio and offers a good spectrum of styles but never without an underlying groove factor. Good recording, to boot, even if the stamp on the inner ring of the CD says it will sound better on a Linn Roll Eyes

A rare live album from a gig in Japan.
I love listening to a live record on the Briks. The excitement and performance really shows through on the set.
I haven't played this CD since the 500's arrival and it's just wonderful!

Glad you like it Huw. They are playing Brighton Komedia tonight. Trying to make up my mind if I want to attend or not.

Working at home today, no neighbours and Buddy always needs some liberal action with the volume control imo...

Redshift 'Redshift I' (1996). For any fan of old school electronic music, this is very 70's Tangerine Dream sequencer driven music, but with a tighter, slightly harder edge. Mark Shreeve is on excellent form with his modular Moog system.

What would folk recommend as a good introduction to Porcupine Tree?

Mat I like Fear of a Blank Planet. Just a superb album at the heavier end of the repertoire but it offers a lot IMHO.

I know! Good to see you trying out some jazz Stu. This one is essential. Next thing you know, you'll be out buying ECM and E.S.T albums Winker

Me too. I presume everyone else got the two discs, the one packages with gaps, and the one in the clear slip with continuous sound. Enjoying this.

Porcupine Tree 2009 thread, live, releases.

Matt:
What Porcupine Tree would you recommend:
If you want the more melodic side, think Radiohead crossed with Pink Floyd, then I agree with Munch 'Signify' (1997) is excellent.
If you want something much heavier, a metal sound then 'Fear of a Blank Planet'(2007) is very popular.
If you would like something between the two 'In Absentia'(2001) has still got the melodic feel, but is starting to have a much harder sound.

Munch:
I can't believe you have only just got 'Kind of Blue', such an amazing album. I listened through the CD from the 50th anniversary set earlier. This album never dies on you, it is especially good at 1am, the lights down and a glass of wine in your hand.

Why ? 'cos I want to hear what it's like.

That explains the 2 discs any way.

Jamie,

PT have published the manufacturing problem here.

Warning: The recording level of this 'Ilosaarirock' release is quite Low. I had the volume set to "11" and by the time it was half way through "Sleep Together" my NAP250 Shutdown Frown. It's still hot, 15 minutes after powering down. Pete Townshend will be getting a a piece of my mind Winker

Mat,

This may interest you for Porcupine Tree and all things Steven Wilson (if you fancy investigating his other projects) The complete SW Discography

Thanks folks, had a listen on Spurtify and put an order in for Fear of a Blank Planet and Signify.
Stu...if you like Kind of Blue, have a listen to two of my great faves. I love all Coltrane (I think his contribution to Kind of Blue is massive). Love Supreme is his masterpiece, but I love (and I'm listening to):

Wells is in great form, and still a teenager! This is going to be one of those reach for first CD's Big Grin

Stuart:
Try track 4 'Miles', it is a gem, it was on 'Desert Island discs' last week.

Dan:
Thanks for the info on the release. I have been a Porcupine Tree fan since the release of 'Signify' and have a few of Steve Wilson's other projects, and also guest appearances. Porcupine Tree from 1996-2002 remains my favourite material by him.

Edgar Froese 'Epsilon in Malaysian Pale'
Following on from listening to 'Phaedra' last night after hearing it used on the Charlie Brooker's programme (BBC4). I love this album, so much lighter and gentle than the dark material Tangerine Dream were releasing at the time.

Sadly the original recording is not available. Virgin will not allow Froese to release it himself, so only a rerecorded version can be bought through his website, of which I have not heard good reports. I only have a CDR of the original recording. Lovely album.

Sadly the Virgin contract Tangerine Dream signed in the 1970's is held against them still, and they are not allowed to release soundboard recordings of the concerts from that period (1973-83), despite the demand from their fans. The only archive concerts the band have been able to officially release are from after 1986, by which time they had lost it. Sad.

Now to the cricket to see if England can manage to snatch a victory and take the 1 day series.

Transition in Tradition (En hommage à Sidney Bechet)- Courtney Pine, Harry Brown, Omar Puente, Cameron Pierre, Alex Wilson, Darren Taylor, Robert Fordjour

Again, another pointer from Adrian. I love the original Sidney Bechet recordings and this is a very nice hommage, but as per norm with Courtney Pine there is no missing the nods to John Coltrane. This is a very nice, upbeat disc with excellent playing from all participants. Anyone with an interest in the UK jazz scene should have a few CP discs and this would do remarkably well as a starter, even if it is his most recent. Now need to see whether this was released on vinyl.

Not noticing any "low level" on the PT album.

Keep posting the Miles albums , so I can tot up how much I'm saving! Razz
