I am not sure if I would go see Herbie at this point or not. In your instance, I am not a real Gershwin fan, so I too would have declined. His last couple discs have had some interesting things on them, but I think the only thing that could enthuse me to go live is if he and Christina Aguilera were together. see below

My passion for Herbie is mostly late 70's/early 80's with Ron Carter and Tony Williams. A highlight in my concert history is the 1982 Mount Hood Jazz Festival when I saw Ron, Herbie, Tony and a very young (21 yoa) Wynton Marsalis close the Saturday night session on a very warm August night. Branford joined them at times as well and they "recreated" a few from their Mile's quintet history. It was spellbinding.

Enjoy your Sunday, Haim.

Jeff A

Thanks, Jeff.

I hope that you have a good Sunday as well. It is turning cloudy here, probably more challenging for the pilots who are going to fly in the Chicago air show later.

I would have loved to see Hancock perform this solo 1978 work recorded in Japan again:

Haim

I do not know that album, I will investigate further. Thanks.

Jeff A

ps not available through my library system so I am downloading it at amazon.com. It will be the soundtrack today to Tiger winning the PGA Championship.

Haim, do you know the music of Cyrus Chesnut ? His first album "Revelation", in particular, is excellent.

Cyrus was quite the audiophile darling back in the nineties for the quality of recording on "Revelation". Excellent piano trio recording, Cyrus brings a bit of gospel and blues to his jazz, and an amazing left hand. At first it sounds like all technique and little substance but repeated listenings bare out the quality of his approach.

Great album Jeff however I saw Herbie Hancock way abck in the 70's and he was the worst concert I have ever been to.

Absloutely boring. Think half of the audience left before he was halfway through the concert.

That is unfortunate, Ewen. No fun being disappointed by an artist. Perhaps Herbie's weakness is wanting to do "everything", straight ahead, bop, fusion, and now, pop. But I have been amazed by some of his solos and fills like with no other pianist possibly with the exception of Bill Evans, in my experience.

Hope you are doing well, Ewen. Lots of annual tests ahead for me, we shall see how that goes.

Jeff A
