A 21 year old cd... and one of the very first cd's i purchased.
It's very pleasing to hear again how well this reproduction is, and with the VSO in full swing too, it's been a few years since this disc was last played.

Musik to do the housework to! : )

Picked up the re-master of Pink Floyd's Relics CD the other day while looking for CD's I had planned on buying. I got Relic's out of curiosity I guess and hey, it's Pink Floyd. Listened to it last night, well the first 4 tracks anyway before I couldn't take it anymore. My review: if you already have it as I do, sorry. If you plan on getting it, don't. Of course this is my opinion only and realize we all differ in taste.

Rediscoveries... I love them. CD's you have bought and sit there, until you are ready to value them. A great example:

Interesting that you post this, here...

A notable recent release, in my opinion. I like the "Variations", but am undecided about the Forellenquintett...

How about you ?

cheers

Hey Stefan,
I first heard of Martin Helmchen a couple of months ago when I took a chance and bought his Schubert (Sonata in A / Moments musicaux) album. I was very impressed. He epitomized Schubert playing for me; his tone is warm, sensitive, and dreamlike.

From what I heard, I "think" this latest release is going to be one of my favorites as well. I say "think" because I never really had a chance to hear the first half of this CD properly lastnight. I don't know if I'm the only one who experiences this but my CDS3 has never been able to play SACD's properly. Most of this CD (especially the first half) skips and jumps about erratically. The problem is that I have many PentaTone recordings and probably 80% of them are unplayable. Thankfully my trusty i-Pod delivers for these. In fact, my 20 year old, $200 Philips CD player even plays these discs without incident?

From what I heard though - this is just a fantastic recording in regards to playing and recorded sound. Listening to the "Trockne Blumen" and Notturno - strings / piano / balance just superb. With the Amati Homage Winker it is like the performers are right in my room - it's that good. From the bits I heard of the "Trout" I may agree with you. Nothing wrong with it other than my feeling was that they were holding back a little. It is a cautious approach and maybe in time they will take more chances? The strength though is the tight, solid playing and wonderful interplay between the players. I just got a real sense of a magic as these players bounced ideas back and forth. The exchanges were effortless and just made sense.

So yes, I'd endorse this and highly recommend this recording to anyone.
Cheers,
Doug
