What is this like?

I enjoyed his albums up to 'Dead Bees on a Cake' and the compilation 'Everything and Nothing', but his work since then has left me dead.

I saw him a couple of years ago (6th time), and everything was bland, slightly jazzy, a bit depressed, but no edge or character.

Of those I went with, one disliked the gig like, me, and two others really enjoyed it. Perhaps I am moving away from his music, rather than, or as much as, the opposite. I have 'Blemish' and have played it about three times, trying to like it, but failing, I also listened to 'Nine Horses' , but could not find anything to latch on to.

I love his album, and live album with Robert Fripp, and his first three solo albums are excellent, as were Japan, even the first two albums.

So where does this fit in his musical development?

Have been listening to:

'Time Flies' I like a lot, and the second disc too.

I think the long track has a lot of padding. Steve Wilson does place Yes 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' among his favourites, so perhaps the padding could be an influence from there, or perhaps he has just fallen into the same pitfalls of the idea of 'filling' a side of a disc. I do like 'Topographic', and I like this to some extent, more than 'Blank Planet'.

Does not match up to 'Signify' or 'In Absentia' though.

I have no Thomas Dobly, any recommendations for a starting point?

Not good. Abstract, totally experimental and really not something you would want to play twice. I will give it another go sometime but probably should have saved my cash.

I've got Golden Age of Wireless, The Flat Earth, and Aliens Ate My Buick. I love the quirkyness.

Also have Hyperactive! which is a compilation of the early stuff. I see that is available SH at Amazon for 0.95 + 1.21 P&P.

I've picked up the vinyl at the local car boots, usually about 50p each. I haven't had a look on Spotify yet.

By a long way. I think this one in particular has been transformed.

Can't wait for my system to be back up and running and working myself through both boxes. A few more short weeks I hope. Cool

One for my shopping list, might get a chance to hit some of the record stores in lower Manhattan on Friday.

Hopefully it gets released on vinyl, not just as a £90 Special Edition with a load of superflous junk.

I've already got a flat full of that stuff.

Thanks for that. I will take your advice.

He has been going that way for a while. I liked his early instrumental albums with Holgar Czukay, and especially Steel Cathedrals/In Praise of Shamans, but I haven't bothered with his work since 'Blemish'.

Not PTs best but pretty good, more of the same really. Perhaps SW is running out of new ideas? 7.5/10

Porcupine Tree 'Signify'. Orignal single CD release, my first Porcupine Tree album a present back in 1997.

It puts things in perspective, the new album does not compare well with this, but then I think it is their best album anyway.

I do like 'Time Flies' and the 4 track CD on the new album, but 'The Incident' does have a lot of padding, and not much in the way of memorable melodies.

Fascinating piano sounds for mind stimulus...
It's a lend from a colleague-friend who isn’t yet sure if he can ever take to it, poor boy.
It sure is very strange but i rather like it : )

I did listen to the 'Nine Horses' album, but I could not get into it. The friend who liked the gig I saw a couple of years ago liked that album, so perhaps it is I who am moving away from David Sylvian's music.
