Nice location of yours, by the way, Jeff. Still listening to it at least once a week.

After a first listen, I like the new one very much.

I have had the new once since it was released and, as with all the JH I have (about 7), I like it a lot. Like you, if you use the search function for Joe Henry, I have mentioned him from time to time Smile

regards
Jeff A

ps: a favorite from Tiny Voices

Come see the golden light,
Because I've turned the gold light on.
Sometimes, God knows, you've got to
Learn to shine on your own.

I step out of the darkness
And for a moment I'm only living by your kiss,
And just for now our flesh and blood
Is no more real than this

Heh heh.

You maybe know the first track, Little Fluffy Clouds, the early nineties comedown classic that samples an old RLJ interview (without her permission).

I don't think I've played it for about fifteen years, and except for the last track, it hasn't aged well.

I love that track, & always wondered who the voice was.
When you posted "I only know RLJ from Little Fluffy Clouds - what album should I go for?" next door,
I assumed there was an RLJ album I hadn't heard of with a co-incidental title!

Ouch! Indeed Eek

I like Tiny Voices very much too.

For a reason, Joe Henry got me with his lyrics as well as with his music. As English is not my primary language, it's usually not the case as I don't take the time to pay attention to the words so often. Unfortunately, there are things that one simply cannot understand if one's not truly fluent in the right language, or even born in the right country. Add some poetic license to it and you're toast. Take Our Song for instance, I'm sure there are subtleties that I'll never get, never mind how hard I try.

But anyway, the emotional content of the lyrics of songs like You Can't Fail Me Now, Time Is A Lion, Wave (wonderful) or God Only Knows touches me a lot, even if I don't fully understand them. Even in a foreign language, the beauty of his stories, the richness of the rhymes, leave me speechless. And not many french-speaking singers make me feel the same.

Now back on track with the harder rocking stuff.

Viking (Black) Metal at his best: Enslaved, Mardraum

A very interesting band. They evolved from the scandinavian Black Metal scene, and developed their music in more complex patterns and textures. Later albums seem to go successfully further along this path, but I've not heard them.

Just in case, Mardraum means nightmare. Try the eponymous song.

Still not for the kids.

Good call Richard, thank you for the reminder. I like it very much. Haven't listened to it for ages.

Nicely said, sir. Some others seem to be showing some interest in JH the past few days.

Last one for the evening, the hardest rocking free jazz/avant-garde band I've ever heard.

Electric Masada, At the Mountains of Madness (Disc 1)

Bizarre bleeps. Marc Ribot on screaming guitar. Two drummers who groove like no one else.

Brilliant. Of course: it's John Zorn.

4. Finale (Bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell

Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam
Bernard Haitink conductor

Phillips (p) 1969

Playing the fifth record of this 10 x LP box-set.
With a nice sympathetic 'romantic' theme to follow up my earlier play, Berlioz ~ Romeo et Juliette.
I own another version of Bruckner's 4th Symphony but it's not as enjoyable to my ears as this Haitink/Concertgebow version
Perhaps oddly, compared to any of my Beethoven box-sets, I’m far happier listening to these Bruckner symphonies.
A very underplayed composer on this forum imho : )

Stu, it's ironic that a 55 minute continuous piece of music works better for us LP fans Winker. Notice I didn't mention we were old Roll Eyes

Listening to the debut Radio show (SAINT FM - Maldon, Essex) for The Lunar Pilots. On 7th July 2009 The Lunar Pilots were guests and performed 4 live tracks: Hurry Up & Live, This Is The Time, Fall From Grace and Beautiful Game along with an interview.

Porcupine Tree 'Deadwing' - something to drive me along while trying to finish a project (only 3 hours sleep last night).

Re: Rickie Lee Jones and 'Little Fluffy Clouds' I heard that she was not happy with it being used, out of context, and I think she had a cold during that interview. I like the track, but agree that the album has not dated well.
