Believe it or not, a recent acquaintance. A little dated but quite nice. Nice cocktail piano on "San Tropez"..

When I was in Eastbourne in '87, trying to learn a bit of the English language, this was nearly everywhere, on the radio, in the shops, impossible to miss it. All the music shops were green.

The Smiths, The Queen Is Dead

I was much older then, and I must say I despised them fiercely, as all these 80's bands. I was into 70's rock and prog at the time, and considered that these guys were not musicians and worth a penny. Instead, I discovered the Megastore in London - which totally amazed me, had never seen anything like that before - and spent all my money buying tons of LPs of 70's music (I remember paying CHF 50.- to send them home, and that was a lot!).

Well, I'm younger than that now, I tried to open my mind a bit and have found quite a few 80's band worth a listen Winker I'm even trying to listen to The Smiths from time to time, and I must say I quite like this one. There's some nice diversity in the songs, the lyrics - which I tried to read - are quite interesting, some of the stories told are great and the musicians are a lot more talented than what I once thought. I'm still not a great fan of Morrissey's singing though, but I'm not giving up.

I still rate 'Mary' as a superb piece of pop music.

Interesting (to me) that although I often love an ECM album it is often because of the support players and not always the main act?

I can associate with that. I am not a big fan of Ensresen's voice in this case but it is still a good listen but not one I would play very often. She has also done a few albums with Bugge Wesseltoft on jazz land recordings. Now he is an artist worth checking out.

Good to see you are paying attention, I did have a "most jazz" qualifier, in my statement.
Always good to have a get out clause eh?

Re EST, and some others, they seem to have an ability to play the music over you(as in a sheet) rather than at you in an "look what I can do" way.
Sorry I really don't have the words, I think you might get my drift.

Not quite sure whether that means good or bad. Anyway, not to worry, let me know when you want to come over for your next jazz listening session. Maybe we could start a West Sussex jazz appreciation society Winker

Try out Filming as well as Sharing. And then nearer Christmas, play It's Snowing on my Piano.

Not sure I'm quite in the mood for this my friend. I will try it later.

Something different (not a Japanese copy):-

Posted on: 24 September 2009 by m0omo0
So here you go:

Kate Bush, This Woman's Work, Volume I (bonus disc from the eponymous box set)

Well, this is a collection of slow songs mostly. Let's say I don't find it very digest as a whole. But there are a few very nice songs and I'd say it's better to listen to them separately from the others. Maybe it's something for HDX owners ? Winker

I've had a look at AllMusic's review, and I must say I mainly agree with them as far as Volume I is concerned. I'd pick the same songs which are indeed wonderful, plus one or two that I like (but not the songs in French!). You can listen to excerpts of the songs there. Note that they reviewed the Japanese version of the box, which is not the one that I have. I haven't got the songs lyrics in this disc, for instance.

Was it me, I wouldn't buy this box set for this disc alone, especially if you already own the "official" albums. As you said, it's not cheap and I'm sure these songs are - or will be - available in another form. But I'm not really a dedicated fan, so YMMV.

Not sure that helps
Maurice

PS: I'm afraid you'll have to wait till tomorrow for Volume II!

Thanks Maurice - as you say, probably not worth it and I will stick with what I have got. Thanks for listening to it!
