Debs,
Never heard Kurt Masur's symphonies, I imagine they're very good. How do they compare to other Beethoven symphonies you have heard?
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
i'm still at a very elementary level with symph/conductor comparisons, and only at the stage of learning the differences of Ludwig's Nine.
However, my first tentative impressions are...
Karl Bohm Wiener Philharmonia/DG ...sounds nice, okay, but perhaps lacking character, and not particularly involving.
Kurt Sanderling Philharmonia/EMI ...i haven't cleaned them yet. Well presented box-set with interesting smell of previous owner pipe tobacco, had a curious play of no.1 which was ’musically’ enough to disappoint me somehow (hope it was just the mood i was in) need to give this box another try after a good clean up.
Otto Klemperer Philharmonia/EMI ...very smooth and classy sound, a welcome delicacy with solo instruments. They say he’s the best, and i dare not say anything rude of Otto on this forum, some of his fans here may be reading this rubbish i write ; )
Herbert von Karajan Berliner Philharmonia/DG ...a friend lent me the CD box-set that i really did not get on with, may have over-played them at the time, got Nine-fatigued. However, i have a vinyl version of Herbert’s symph no.9 which i enjoy immensely although these records are in poor condition.
Kurt Masur Gewandhausorchester Leipzig/Philips ...imho this set is very enjoyable, this musik inspires me to play one after another! Also it's nicely spaced on 9 records with the 'spare record areas' put to some excellent Overture play. The reproduction is well done too. So I would well recommended this box-set.

hope this is of some help : )

Thanks Debs. I think we're all in search of the ultimate 9. Mike S rates John Elliot Gardiner's ORR set highly, I have to agree but on a personal note it took a while to overcome the fact that my ex that I had two wonderful children with plays on that with her subsequent new husband. Worth checking out, I love the power of it, only on CD of course.

George Shearing Quintet: Black Satin

Smoooooth.

Jeremy, I need to explore further on Nancy's earlier titles. I very much enjoyed the Wilson/Adderley.

Is it still there? I had heard it had closed and only Bens was left.

I was in it last week. Yes still there.

OK Lontano, I can't remember who told me. I used to visit quite often when I was working in Guildford in another life, I didn't know about Bens then, we found it by accident one day.

Getting better with every listen. At this stage I still prefer some of the older material but it's catching up. The last listen was while lying in bed, lights off, through my ipod/Shure SE530 earphones. It sounded great!

Lontano/Apye

Seagull and myself will be gracing the record fair on Saturday - aiming to ge there for the opening before heading off to quaff a pint or so....... perhaps we could meet up?

(later he will be travelling to the disputed land to listen to the various changes) little does he know...... how little has changed SHHHHHH!

On the black stuff (virgin vinyl) too many clicks etc for a new sealed copy for my liking
