I am still awaiting mine to come in from Marshall, Oliver. However I have a copy of the Black Triangle which is stunning (well to me anyway). It is the version that turned me on to the album.

Will need to do a shoot out when mine comes in.

inspired by the gospal according ... on sky arts a few weeks back. Must now get everything from 1970 to 77!
Paul be careful as the best sounding discs are not the remasters.
Thanks ewen,

I remember you telling me before to get the 93/4 versions but the price of most of them is expensive, i'll have to wait for when a bargain appears.

I don't have that Black Triangle, I'm looking forward to your review. Just did the three way shoot out on the Pet Sounds - you find it on the other forum in the AF Pet Sounds thread. Will post it here later.

AF vs DCC vs Greenline - Shoot Out (part 1)

Since I usually don't spend too much time on shoot outs (I rather lean back and enjoy), you might find my approach rather amateurish but I'm always open to your suggestions for part 2.

You will find my system set up in my profile. I have the DCC for many years and it has always been one of my personal favorites. A few months back I got a Greenline - I didn't do a detailed shoot out at the time but was surprised how good the Greenline sounded. Since then I have re-tubed my amp which has further improved system performance IMHO (mainly tighter base). I had listened to the whole AF in the morning when it arrived.

I used the first minute of track 1 and my analog sound level meter to see if I would have to do any volume adjustments between the 3 CDs. In my listening position, with volume at 12 o'clock and the meter on slow response I got the following readings:
- AF moving between 90-105 dB, mainly in the 95-100 dB range
- DCC, roughly the same as the AF
- Greenline moving between 90-100 dB, mainly moving around 95dB

You could argue I should have adjusted the volume a little up for the Greenline but I decided against it and left the volume throughout the whole session on 12 o'clock.

I played the three discs on each track in random order.

Track 1, first 60 seconds

I did not hear a significant difference between the AF and the DCC, both were a little fuller in sound than the Greenline.

Track 3, first 90 seconds

The vocals on all three sounded very good, maybe a slight edge for the AF in terms of detail. The base on both AF and DCC could be felt as vibration in my listening position, the base on the Greenline was rather flat in comparison.

Track 4, first 60 seconds

Vocals on all three are very good but I would rank order: AF over DCC over Greenline. The base for both DCC and AF was superior to the Greenline.

Track 5, full track

I enjoyed both the DCC and AF, I clearly preferred them over the Greenline in every dimension. I gave the DCC the overall edge.

Since the Greenline had not outperformed the AF or DCC at any point so far, I decided to drop it from the shoot out to focus more on the direct comparison between AF and DCC.

Track 7, full track

I played this track several times back and forth between the DCC and AF. There are distinct differences in sound but maybe I'm not brave enough to make a call on which one I do prefer.

At this stage I called it a day but am happy for any suggestions on what to listen for, which tracks to play etc etc for part 2.

One of the most outsanding live albums ever. Stunning guitar work by Taylor. The versions of Gimme Shelter and Street Fighting man tells you why the Stones at the time were "THE" Greatest rock and roll band in the world. I was lucky to see them at the Glasgow Apollo on that tour one day after my birthday. Fantastic gig.

It's superb, his other abums can get a little boring but this is just wonderful all the way. Career too short! Just sent you a mail and mentined this, i'm on the lookout for a special pressing of this, can you help?

I might have a few Stones 32DPs coming my way soon. I had never seen the Spanish cover of Sticky Fingers until someone mentioned it recently - what were they thinking?

Darcy reckons that there are differences between the 32DP and the 23DP's. Personally I have never heard a 32DP Oliver so couldn't tell you.

Mine are all 23DP'S
