quote:Recorded at Audio Magic, Buffalo, New York in September 1990.
The self-titled 1990 debut by Ani DiFranco created a buzz in folk music circles unlike anything seen since Suzanne Vega's debut of five years earlier. That the album was self-produced and self-released on DiFranco's own Righteous Babe label, and that DiFranco was not yet 20 at the time, only added to the clamor.
With her shaved head and tattoos, DiFranco looked tough and self-assured. But the beauty and emotional depth of this album come from the way assertive, almost angry songs like "Out of Habit" are counterbalanced with tender, less guarded songs like the apprehensively romantic "Both Hands." DiFranco's searing social commentary is particularly corrosive in the emotional "Lost Woman Song." Recorded with one acoustic guitar and occasional percussion, the album sounds intimate but never skeletal.
I know I keep posting this album but it is rather good.

doesn't relate to the above, but do you have Laura Veirs "Two Beers Veirs" ep ? I think I recall you saying you got it at a show. If not it is now available at amazon.
hope you are doing well.

You may be surprised at just how far my musical tentacles can reach...

As to Brett's new offering. As you know I am a newcomer to the world of Brett Anderson and on first listen I prefer 'Wilderness'. Perhaps because I rate 'The Empress' as simply superb.

I think Wilderness is near perfection but am looking forward to having more by Brett.
I will probably get the Ani tomorrow at the same time.
I need to let my laptop rest a little, it has been downloading a lot today

Discovered through this thread, and a welcome addition to what I laughingly refer to as my life

I cannot recommend the self titled album enough. Her unique ability to choose the right words in the right order is breathtaking and her prose is outstanding. Add to that her political views, slanted perspective and laid back musical presentation and you have a truly seminal album.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the heads up but yes, I have a signed copy of that EP. I'm still trying to work out how I'm going to get to one of her shows when she tours here in January - I might be able to make the Oxford date with a bit of luck.
I'm keeping well thanks, how are you? Maybe drop me an email (address in profile)?

Another one I have Jeff to thank for.

I managed to bag an advance promo copy of...
...and I have to say that it is good.
I have mixed feelings about Robbie. On the one hand I love Robbie and I have always said that his voice can be brilliant, however, his songwriting let him down on the last album (be it his or other peoples). Some will declare this a return to form and it is almost true but only because the last album was so crap. If you ignore the last album then this new album is a step backwards, if you follow my drift?
I like it, but at this point in his career he ought to have moved on from 'no one understands why money & fame are awful'...which he almost has but...having said that, a really enjoyable album and a step in the right direction. At some point Robbie is going to drop all that baggage and record an album of such musical importance that all his critics will be struck dumb. I for one, can't wait.

The Temper Trap
plus, I just got six tickets for a double bill of Blind Pilot and Laura Veirs in Portland on Friday Dec 4, 2009. Smallish, standing only venue, should be great fun with my spouse and four friends. I am excited.

Whats the new room sound like so far??
Stu
When I first set the system up it sounded pretty bad, not enough bass, muddy mid-range, harsh trebble.
Having placed the rug and the shelves and adjusted the speaker placement I'm listening to real music now. Still a bit of fine-tuning to do but I'm getting there.

I found it gets better everytime i play it.
There are so many tv adds and programs over here using bits of tracks from it at the mo.

That album cover always looks like a bag of teeth.
Hows the new room coming along??
Stu
Hi Stu,
Don't let the cover put you off - it's a great album! The room is looking good. The plasterer is coming on Monday and then it's just the electrics to finish off, a bit of painting and carpet to put down. I ordered the blinds last night as well. I won't be in there this time home but certainly by the next time I come home at the end of November.

Laura Veirs ep
my favorite side of LV, pretty much just an acoustic guitar and that wonderful voice.

Lee Maddeford
"Songs About Life, Love, and the Devil's Dog, Ralf"

with thanks to Maurice
quote from a blog: There’s a huge variety of quality music (well over 10 hours of recordings) to enjoy, crossing several genres and many projects led by Maddeford under various names. Visit his listening lounges to browse roughly by genre (piano duo, songs in French, songs in English, lab, and others), the library for lyrics, lead sheets, scores, and information lounges describing each project.

Any thoughts, Adrian? A bit dull or is it me?
Hi Haim - I've found this one a bit dull so far (two or three listens) but I'm prepared to stick with it for a bit. Maybe my expectations of this one were to high...
Regards
Nigel
