Still too many distractions occurring around me, but I am looking forward to many more listens to attempt to comprehend the complex simplicity of this, musically and lyrically. Thanks for the specific recommend, Gordon.

Matthew Ryan
the new release from a personal favorite artist

Matthew can write a pretty good lyric as well, from an earlier release:

"I was sitting in hell's kitchen,
contemplating murder.
Contemplating murder,
Contemplating the great escape.
When you walked in
looking like crap,
But satisfied.
I swear that you looked satisfied,
And I hated you for that."

I got Embryonic last week--only listened through it twice, so too early to judge, but what I do know is that I find the cover a little bit scary!

This Flaming bargain, which I picked up brand new for 99p yesterday (that's for both a CD and DVD), has a much less disturbing cover.

Much as I love Kate Bush I still think that she has never since reached the heights of her earliest two albums. It is incredible that she was only 17 when she started recording these songs. I always put them on when I am finding myself not enjoying my music for whatever reason and they always bring me back to the right place.

There is a dynamic about the recordings, a combination of light and shade, soft and hard, loud and quiet that just lifts them above other more modern examples. I also love Stu Elliot and Del Palmer's bass playing on them which is immensely tuneful and atmospheric with the right amount of power to nicely underpin each track and give a lovely counterpoint to the falsetto she often employs on the records. Two of my all time favourites.

A really well-balanced piece of pop music !

Brett Anderson "Slow Attack"

New to me - let me have your thoughts pls.

Hi Oliver

Brett is an artist brought to this thread by Maurice (mOomoO). This is his newest release - yesterday in UK and today in US. Brett was singer for Brit band Suede.

If you are inclined to try him, "Wilderness" is the place to start. Hauntingly beautiful, Brett's unique voice backed simply by acoustic guitar, piano and strings.

After just one listen, I like the new one as well, a little more baroque.

Listen to samples (Spotify, amazon) or mySpace and make sure you like the voice - if so, it is all good from there, and more often, excellent

For Oliver and anyone else curious, there's a link at the Independent's website just now that allows you to download eight Brett Anderson tracks for free - four from Slow Attack, four from Wilderness. I remember reading a really terrible review for Wilderness in the Indy, so an interesting choice.

Thanks to Maurice and Jeff for reawakening my interest in Mr Anderson - he has such an expressive voice that suits his stripped down solo stuff perfectly. Saying that, even listening to his latest, I still expect him to go into the chorus to Animal Nitrate at any minute.

With that in mind...

Chief, how does Von compare to Sigur Ros' later releases? I've got most of their other things (including a couple of EPs), but have never bought Von (and don't like trying things on Spotify etc--it makes it too easy to dismiss something that requires repeated listening to appreciate)
