"Now regarded as one of the most important composers of the second half of the twentieth century, Toru Takemitsu ws the first Japanese composer to gain international status. The works on the disc cover Takemitsu's career from the early Solitude Sonore to Spirit Garden, "my experiment with and on-going inquiry into orchestral colour and melody," composed two years before his death. Inspired by a dream, A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden has become one of Takemitsu's most performed works, notable for the interweaving of silences, passages of randomness, surges of dissonance and delicate fragmentary melodies."

Surprised I haven't seen many comments about this. I've played the Paris CD several times, and think it's a real grower. London next!

Jim, what do you think? It's a bit of an unusual mix of songs, and a lot poppier than I was expecting, but I quite like it.

Not quite what I was expecting either Chief, some cracking pop songs. Having said that I particularly like Ludlow Street with it's CW feel & I'm not that keen on all things country!

First listen:

"The album presented ravishing and most unorthodox accounts of mostly Italian instrumental music from the early Baroque. Based on Italian Renaissance sources from the 16th century – madrigals, chansons and virtuoso lute music – the new programme goes even further back – from the “seconda pratica” of monophonic expressiveness to the “prima pratica” of polyphonic complexity. Once again putting a strong emphasis on improvisation, Lislevand and his colleagues disclose the astounding modernity and emotional wealth in the music of composers such as Giovanni Antonio Terzi or Joan Ambrosio Dalza."

I hardly seem to have sat down since I got home last Wednesday, so today I am making time for myself with feet up and good intentions of chilling to a few ECM's. Well, the alternative is re-fitting the radiators that I took off yesterday morning in readiness for the plasterers, and clean clean clean the building site which we are currently living in. It's depressing just to look at so I think I'll stick to the former idea! Smile Starting with John Abercrombie......................

Billy Eckstein "No Cover, No Minimum"

Eckstein has a beautiful voice, and phrases better than anyone. But his rhythm is dreadful. The band spent an hour hanging on his every word, trying to follow a beat that never settled down.

Markah, is this recording any good, or does it suffer from the common problem of "a group of great musicians performing with great virtuosity, but no compositional direction"?
