Oooh, this looks interesting. I didn't know Manu Katche was recording for ECM--ever since hearing Peter Gabriel's 'Passion', I've thought he's great.

Markah, is this recording any good, or does it suffer from the common problem of "a group of great musicians performing with great virtuosity, but no compositional direction"?

This is a very good album and easy to enjoy. Quite melodic and IMHO does not suffer from no compositional direction. If you have access to Spotify, it is on there to try out.

Nathaniel,

I would agree with Lontano's comments above. I really enjoy this disc.

It's nighttime: modern classical music makes so much more sense when you're a little sleepy.

I got this recording from a bargin bin sometime back in the mid/late 90s, and have never really bonded with it. Perhaps I'll give the Gidon Kremer recording of the same piece a go--it seems to be the 'definitive' version (the work was, after all, written for Kremer). I'm don't know enough of Nono's music to have a feel for it, but like Boulez and Stockhausen, he seems to be regarded as one of the important figures from the Darmstadt brigade. Dunno why, but I know much more of the others' outputs.
