Sufjan on the other hand (though haven't heard this 'un)...

Not listened to it yet. I bought it on the strength of the "Stillness is the Move" video, which I caught while channel surfing:

llama!

There's something charming about the white indie chicks trying to sing like Mariah Carey, the "spazzy" dance moves and the way the llama first pops up. And, musically, it's certainly different.

Sufjan - yes, he's great, although I've played "Illinois" to death and hven't listened to it for a while. The new album is an orchestral piece celebrating the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. I'll be giving it a spin this weekend.

Some amazing singing from Bartoli - a disc to dip in and out of rather than listen to in one straight sitting.

Rokia Traoré - Tchamantché

My local library has quite a reasonable media section. Back in spring, the striking cover of this album, sitting on the 'recently returned' pile, caught my attention as I was frantically searching for a sixth CD to complete the coming commuting week's 'in-car' selection of CDs before a traffic warden patrolled the library car park and noticed that, having no change to hand, I'd failed to pay and display.

It was a serendipitous find--I'm really taken with the opening track 'Dounia' and especially the later 'Kounandi'. The only downer is 'The Man I love', near the end, which, although not bad, is out of character with what precedes it, spoiling it a little.

Before preparing this post, I did a quick search and noticed that a couple of other forum members rate it very highly indeed. It is good.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts "Wise Guy"

What an 80s rush, and a stone cold groove.

I got this when I lived in Sarasota, Florida. It was great beach music.

Got me nice and mellow tonight.

One last note. The lyrics are hilarious :-)

And the recording has some odd harmonics (flat 7th) that sounds like equipment problems somewhere. I haven't heard anything like it on another album.

And what a great album title. No doubt you could actually weld with the output from one of Neil's amps.
