What is it like?

Nine wayward pop songs. Depending on the track, you hear high life guitar stylings, moody-Europop; (think Associates' "White Car in Germany"), South African township style chanting, and even Mariah Carey-esque vocal acrobatics on one song. It's a weird, messsy mixture that somehow works, thanks, in no small part, to the close harmonies of the three female singers recruited for this album. I applaud the band for trying something ambitious and different.

You can listen/watch on YouTube, or (I imagine) Spotify, and decide for yourself.

Regards
Nigel

Btw how is that Geri Allen recording on Telarc?

fama,

I am sorry, I missed your post. Geri Allen, in the good company of Holland & DeJohnette, is playing her piano improvisations with a great touch and energy.

Another disc of hers which I like is with Charles Lloyd on ECM:

Sting: If On A Winter's Night ...

I initially heard a pre-release copy of this album and it did nothing for me. I heard it played on radio in the week prior to it's release and saw a couple of interviews with Sting on the television. The album started to grow on me so I picked up a copy while shopping in the local supermarket. I'm really getting to like this one. It's very different to Sting's rock albums but it might just be for you.

Beethoven - String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132 and String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135. Lindsay String Quartet

Every time I hear the 3rd movement of Op. 132 (the 'Heiliger Dankgesang') I'm overwhelmed by its simple, direct beauty--the Lindsay version is quite lovely, capturing the fragility of recuperation. These late quartets are really something special.

Hello Nathaneil,

It's taken me some time to understand LvW's string quartets (actually i still don't really understand them to be honest), but his later ones seem far more agreeable to me, and op.132 is indeed a corker, i like it for it's delicacy although this may just be the interpretation from the 'Quatuor Bulgare' which is the only version i've heard. I would bet this fine work would sound varying in alternative interest when played from different quartets.

The Quatuor Bulgare is excellent imho, very warm bassfull cello, a rich mellow viola, the violins do sound a tiny bit shrill occasionally but i think this a microphone-position-recording-level problem, i don't doubt the musicianship.
My record box-set is a good pressing in mint condition. I would love to get hold of a vinyl box-set of the Quatuor Bulgare Mozart string quartets too but have only seen it around for sale well out of my price range!

Debs

Allegro moderato ~ Andante ma non troppo e molto cantabile
Presto
Finale : Adagio quasi un poco andante ~ Allegro.

Bartok String Quartets - perhaps not the easiest way to start a Sunday morning's listening, but they suit both the weather and my mood

Thanks for the recommendations ofcourse I love Charles LLoyd and have the "THE CALL".
I wondered in particular about the sound of that Telarc disc ,is the sound in any way lacking
dynamics?
