Barbra Streisand - Yentl

What an amazing voice Barbra has?

Especially - "Papa, can you hear me?"

Debussy - Pelléas et Mélisande - Maria Ewing, François Le Roux, José van Dam, Jean-Philippe Courtis, Christa Ludwig, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Claudio Abbado

A gorgeous opera, though this recording doesn't do it its full justice. It is let down by Le Roux as Pelléas--what is meant to be naivety sounds like overacting: he's a soggy hanky. But the rich orchestral timbre is lovely (especially in the evening), and van Dam is great as Golaud so it makes an indulgent listen.

But I prefer the archaic Desormiere recording with Jacques Jansen and Irene Joachim.

Last one before bed...a massive loss when this chap stepped on a rainbow (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and my personal fave disk of his Shahen Shah).

A nice supper enjoyed with a healthy dose of red wine and Brahms tonight. Quite enjoyable all around I'd have to say...

Now, this Bach really suites my palate. Tharaud is admirably providing the tonal palette here before I eventually desert to find my own pallet (but certainly not before I enjoy some dessert!)

Doug,

I followed in your footsteps and ordered a second copy of the Hussong disc (used, in almost new condition) from Amazon.

Yes, it's a good album, but do you think "The Man I Love" works within its context, or like me, do you find it disrupts the flow, not (just) because it's the only song in English, but because it's mood/character is too different from the songs around it?
