Doug,
How is the new Takacs disc?
Last week I had to chose between Ravel's piano music played by Bavouzet or Tharaud. I went with the younger pianist. Any thoughts?
Enjoy the holiday,
Haim

Thanks Haim, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family too.
The Takacs Quartet, well, they are as always a very exciting ensemble to listen to. Hamelin gives his usual solid performance but the highlight really is the playing of the Takacs.
If you are only getting one of the two Ravels you listed then you made the wise choice in the Tharaud. The issue with me isn't the playing of either; I don't believe one is necessarily better than the other. I can happily live with how either interprets Ravel but with Bavouzet and MDG I have to say that I don't care for the sound of the 1901 Steinway they used to record this disc. This is unfortunate since MDG do know how to record and have some of the best sounding recordings around. When it comes to Debussy though, I can without reservation say that Bavouzet currently is my number one choice. The key is that he plays on a newer Steinway Model D that I feel is one of the loveliest pianos on record. The bass especially when it occasionally reaches way down is to die for.
Cheers,
Doug

Doug,
I don't own any MDG discs. Any suggestions for the label?
Let me know when you are ready for a recommendation. I have another great recording of piano music played on a Hamburg Steinway.

Haim, I have quite a few MD&G recordings so it is hard to think of all the recommended highlights. I have a lot of Mozart, Schubert, Dvorak string quartets for instance. I believe they are all good.

Currently listening to Volume 1. The Piano Trio Op. 1, No. 1 heard here was actually the very first Piano Trio I ever learnt about 8 years ago. The Piano Trio Op. 1, No. 3 was the 2nd piano trio I learnt. And my love for chamber music has grown since and I cannot imagine life without it now.

Doug,
Thanks for the DGMs recommendations.
I consider this piano music of Alberto Ginastera played by Eduardo Delgado to be on the same rare level (in terms of music, performance and sound) as Hussong's disc:

Usually towards Christmas MA Recordings have their annual sale ($13 per disc) so perhaps it is worth waiting a couple of weeks before getting it.
