Oliver,

Stefan had introduced me to Hille Perl and this one is my favorite disc of hers.

I know little of Mr Waits music. Would this be a reasonable first purchase ? Is, perhaps, the guitarist on this Omar Torrez ? I have seen him play a number of times and know he was in the recent tour band of TW.

Thanks
Jeff A

I just bought this (above), but for a first taste, perhaps try...

Nice. The CD I have is "brittle" sounding. An earlier one I had was unlistenable in parts. One of the great albums of all time, though.

winkycanada,

I've a DCC version of Court & Spark and it sure doesn't sound brittle sounding. ( nothing else bordering boring )

I have read somewhere that some parts of recordings are over saturated but Joni wanted that way.

I am not too keen on Audiophool label half-speed mastered discs, but this one I got it for 2 bucks and less noisy than the original issue I have.

I'm very fond of Swordfishtrombones

The 3-discs collection Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, although mainly comprised of tunes not easily available elsewhere, is a great introduction to the multiple facets of Tom Waits' immense talent. Not at all just a bunch of outtakes, it's really a grand thing.

But from the answers you already got, you can now deduce the obvious yourself: there's no such thing as a bad album by Tom Waits (some may just be less good).

Warning: there will be financial casualties... Big Grin
