Revisiting a bunch of hits from my youth... (maybe the Strathisla helped a bit)
Marilyn Dean and James Monroe,
from John Kilzer's Busman's Holiday
I'll Be Here Where the Heart Is (remember Flashdance?) and Bette Davis' Eyes
from Kim Carnes' best of Gypsy Honeymoon
Bette Davis' Eyes was such a hit in France at the time! I remember it fighting with John Lennon's Woman for no. 1 for weeks! Good memories

My god it is years since I have heard that John Kilzer disc. Used to have.
He is now heavily into religion and plays churches round the Memphis area.

I am sure you will. The Beaux Arts Trio are wonderful. I highly recommend their Haydn piano trios as well.

Then I went for something completely different.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Budapest Live
Ever heard this strange beast called Manfred Mann's Earth Band? This album is a live from 1983. It contains mainly covers that were recorded along MMEB's career, including songs from Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan (Mighty Quinn from "The Basement Tapes", as I read recently), The Police and Bob Marley. The sound is not really as refined as it used to be in the 70's, it's harder, with a couple of guitars that rock, but it's really sooo much fun! And it's better played L O U D !!!
I've played my old record so many times! The CD really deserves a remaster, not that the sound is that bad, but it is restrained and the mix is just silly with the public fading in and out. I've just spotted on AMG that a japanese bonus track release existed, so I'm tempted to give it a go. Anybody heard it ?
Cheers
Maurice

Not that the disc is that good, but Marilyn Dean and James Monroe was such a hit at the time, on heavy rotation on our best alternative FM Couleur 3 (and public! and still is! best AND public, I mean).

"Alexander Alexandrovich Alyabiev (1787-1851) is beyond any doubt the greatest Russian Musician of his generation (before Glinka). Why, then is he not known better ? Well…his life reads like a novel ; an officer with the imperial army, he was contaminated by liberal ideas in Paris in 1812 and got close to the Decembrist’s movement, which got him condemned in the 20ies and deported to Siberia a few years later. He there mixes and confronts Caucasian and « white » music (several decades before Borodin espouses the idea) and finally gets back to Moscow in 1843, in pretty poor health.
His famous romance, The Lark, which was later popularised by the variations by Glinka, Liszt and Vieuxtemps was actually written while he was in jail. But this very lark hides an astounding number of other achievements: 5 Operas, 23 Vaudevilles, Symphonic music, Chamber music (long ago lovingly recorded by the Beethoven Quartet) and piano scores.
So where to start? Why not by this very beautiful symphonic programme, played by today’s best Russian chamber orchestra and its conductor, the superb cellist Alexander Rudin? We discover a very personal, inventive composer, reminiscent of young Schubert who clearly deserves better than his current fate!"

Hello Maurice,
you may sample (track 6) before you decide...
Burya (The Tempest), Symphonic Picture 2 minutes 35 seconds
http://www.alpha-prod.com/readmorecd.php?id=314
The album consists of a variety of the music from Alexander Alyabiev, although it does flow though nicely as an album, just put the cd in, press play, and enjoy.
I particularly like: Variations on the Ukrainian theme Ehal kazak za Dunai ~ try saying that after 3 glasses of red wine! (The Cossack on the Danube) for violin and orchestra : )
Kind Regards ~
