Piano concerto in G
Piano Concerto in D for the left hand
Werner Haas piano
Monte Carlo Opera Orchestra ~ Alceo Galliera
The concerto in D for the left hand was written for the Austrian Paul Wittgenstein (1887-1961), who lost his right arm during the First World War. It was first performed in Vienna on November 27, 1931. Although both (the above) concertos were composed about the same time, they are completely different. The unusual instrumental form of the D major concerto may be one reason for this, as the voluntary restriction made Ravel show all that a pianist can do with the five fingers of the left hand, to produce the effect of two-handed playing.
I would have thought this was a two handed pianist if i had not know the title of this musik and read about it on the cover. I'm very impressed with this left hand concerto, a very happy enjoyable sound.
Oddly, nowhere on the vinyl or lp cover does it mention a date of when Werner Haas performed it or when this Philips record was made.
