The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and this is sounding fresh, hitting the mark.

Charles Mingus 'Mingus Ah Um'. This has been my musical discovery of the year so far, thanks to the BBC4 1959 documentary last week. I always thought I didn't like Mingus as I thought someone had played me some a long time ago and I disliked it. I know my tastes have changed over the years, but I think I must have mixed Mingus up with someone else.
What other Mingus albums would people recommend to follow this?

You started with one of my favorites, tough act to follow, you might want to give this one a try.

I love Mingus Jamie, my favourite (and one many consider his masterpiece) is Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, but it takes a wee bit of work. Mingus Mingus Mingus is great as is Mingus Dynasty. Another cracker often going cheap is Mingus in Wonderland. Miles - just saw your post - not many folk seem to like Tijuana, but I'm with you, I love it - fantastic cover on my old vinyl as well.
At the moment tho, it's Fruitbat and co round here...

I'll join in with some Mingus then.

The first two of the albums you mentioned would be right next on my list.

Me too! - and I have. It's on this morning to celebrate managing to get tickets for both Dublin shows to add to the Liverpool date - which just leaves me 997 things to do before I die.
The DVD is exhilarating too even though, technically, it is not brilliant (only 4:3, NTSC); my spine absolutely tingles and I am transported back to the shows last year...

What a shame that this is only 4:3 in this day and age and for a show that was so special. I do find that hard to believe. Anyway I will still enjoy it.
Enjoy your other Cohen dates. Tempting I have to say....
Cheers

Each time I listen to the album and close my eyes I'm right back at the concert here in Sydney earlier this year.

There is to be a BluRay later on this year, culled from the 'best' performances of the tour. More likely to be from the North American leg, but I'm not certain. So, better quality - but possibly losing the magic of a complete, single show. I'm sure to buy it, just to make sure!

Is the baby due this week?
Stu
Two more weeks to go if all goes to plan, still have to get the whole house baby save, but I have already pulled out all the baby CDs. You can never start too early.
