A blast from the past. Looking at the release date this must have been one of the first CD's I bought.

This album doesn't seem to have captured the Christmas spirit, but it is rather good in a Show of Hands sort of way.

I love that one Gordon, along with "Le Voyage De Sahar".

As much as I try to warm to this it is difficult when they have produced so much better stuff. It's still ok though.

She used to have much classier covers in the past.

Mudejar: Begona Olavide
"This 2nd recording by Spanish virtuoso psaltery player Olavide, again reveals her adoration for the Arabic roots of her country's traditional and renaissance music. "Mudejar" refers to moslems that remained in Spain during the Reconquest by the Christians that began in 1492, but did not convert to Christianity. Begoña both sings and directs her fellow musicians which include Ramiro Amusategui on 'ud and saz, vihuela players Daniel Carranza and Felipe Sánchez, percussionist Pedro Estevan (who plays with Jordi Saval), and Begoña's instrument maker husband Carlos Paniagua on psaltery & percussion. Recorded in Spain in the beautiful cathedral of La Monasterio de la Santa Espina."
Highly recommended.

Ahh.. now here is a trip down memory lane. I (am pretty sure I) recall seeing them in Perth in the mid 1980's at a university show. Certainly this album was very popular around town and it was their breakthrough album nationally. The cover is of Mandurah estuary about 70kms south of Perth; it is a gateway town to the coast further south.
Yet another Perth's bands...who like everyone ended up going over east once they had got their grounding locally. There were a lot of good bands in Oz in the 1980's; I think the isolation meant a lot of home grown DIY music culture. When I was a kid none of the big bands came to Perth - so garage bands were a-plenty. Another favourite from that time was The Stems who did not get much recognition internationally but produced a nice 1960s electro-surf-psychedelic sound. Not the same as The Triffids, but still good. You see....you've got me going there....
