Now my most awaited album of the year so far from one of my favourite artists. Due out Monday I managed to pick up a copy on my music travels today
First impressions are excellent with some superb bass playing on this album from one of Europe's finest Arild Andersen. Eivind Aarset, John Paricelli and Kuljit Bhamra make up the rest of the cast.
Tuneful, with world beats and European jazz instrumentation. This could well be in my very top albums of the year.
Will defintely appeal to Stefan, Huw, Oliver, Nigel, Haim etc etc

My favourite antipodean band...Tim Rogers a great songsmith. I was almost tempted into a Dan-fest by Munch...but I'll save it for Sunday.

David,
A very good album.
You might like to try this next.![]()
This is my Fave and most played BH album.
I dont have a vinyl copy though.
Stu
I went to see him live in Sydney a few years ago. I have not played anything of his since. One of my most disappointing live experiences ever.
I have never seen him live.
But know a few people that have over the last ten years or so.
A few of them said the same as you.
Its a shame because his albums are so good.
And he has changed his music big time with every album he has ever done.
Was he on his own when you saw him ? Or with a band?
Stu
It was a full band performance but it lacked any charisma coming from the stage. We were looking at the event rather than participating in it. They were stuck up their own a****.He is very popular in Australia and I had heard good things on his shows. Huwge had also told me he was good. This was a long show. We decided that sleep at home( not at the show) was a more attractive proposition.

First time I saw him was in a very small club in Munich, he and the band were outstanding.
Last time it was so loud that we left before the encores, it was more like attritional noise than music. So what did the bugger then do, play an acoustic set as encore which all the papers then raved about? I was quite disappointed as if I had been on my own I would have persevered. It certainly was a concert where it took the band a long time to warm up, but you can't fault their chops.
Fortunately, it hasn't put me off seeing him again or listening to his music - can't say the same for the missue tho.'
Stu - his back catalogue is available on vinyl, NL pressings I think. Still waiting for mine to arrive

A couple of weeks ago I heard a superb track on Radio 2 on Saturday morning and really wanted to hear more. A bit of research revealed it to be McKenna Mendelson Mainline, a seminal Canadian blues band originating in the late 1960s. It then proved a bit tricky to find one of their two albums on vinyl for sale in the uk, eventually I imported one from Canada which arrived today.
01. One Way Ticket - 2.40
02. She's Alright - 3.35
03. Beltmaker - 3.35
04. Mainline - 6.40
05. Think T'm Losing My Marbles - 2.20
06. Drive You - 2.30
07. T.B. Blues - 2.05
08. Better Watch Out - 4.30
09. Bad Woman - 12.20
10. Don't Give Me No Goose For Christmas, Grandma - 2.30
quote:The first McKenna Mendelson Mainline album, Stink, appeared in the second half of 1969. Stink was received not just as a great album of electric blues , but as some sort of revelation.
Listening now...

Another album I can't see what all the fuss is about,OK he has a great voice, but he does nothing emotional for me. I must have a dead soul.
For onceI agree with you Howard. Does not a lot for me. Pleasant enough.
If we all liked the same stuff it would be a boring old world!
Thanks for taking the time to try it though guys!
Gordon
PS-for trivia fans...
quote:In the recording studio in 1993, Radiohead's Thom Yorke started to rehearse something with the working title of "Our Scott Walker Song". The song would eventually be released under the title "Creep" and it would become one of the greatest songs of the Nineties

Gordon I will try it again when I feel in the mood so that I give it a fair chance for the greatness to hopefully shine through.

Glad you've got yours now.
I've got it on again and am getting more into it. This is my first experience of Mr Sheppard and I am much impressed. Any other recommendations?
BTW I see John Fordham in today's Guardian liked it too.

Hello stu,
Too early to say... i only received the arm/cart on Thursday (had to wait for a new XX-2 because none left in stock).
Still need to check many things again, set things up better, and run-in this new cart, plus other new parts on the LP12, and let it all settle in as a system for a while : )

Steve - it got a good review in JazzWise as well.
I have been a fan since the early 90's. I saw him many times live and he it was always a very good show. He has released quite a few CD's many of which are ebay only jobs now.
I used to love InComotion, Rhythmn Method, Introductions in the Dark and then his debut and Soft on the Inside were well respected as well. Quite a few of the CD's he has released on Provocateur records are still around and worth trying - P.S, Learning to Wave, Dancing Man and Woman as well as one I liked it a lot, Nocturnal Tourist. He can be heard on many Carla Bley albums. Songs with Legs was always pretty enjoyable.
He is playing reasonably close to you with the band on the album - April 30th in Leeds.
Cheers

The Vivaldi edition on Naive gets better and better and we're only around 1/3 of the way through the planned 120 CD releases, this is number 40. Such exciting virtuoso playing and super sound, I think this will be my favorite collection of violin concertoes for some time to come.

I have bought quite a few of these releases and they are excellent. I cannot believe that they will be releasing 120 of them. Amazing that the guy wrote so much music. Are you collecting them all?

Here's a new one on me. Did not know it existed but just came across it on Spotify. From 1996, Louise Hoffsten with a very early recording from my musical heroes the Esbjorn Svensson Trio. (E.S.T). Not one I will be playing again but good to hear the history.

Simon and Garfunkel live!
I love the way this atmospheric album builds to the hauntingly simple 'The sound of silence'. Great artists, great songs, great times...

Excellent, really enjoyed it. It's much more laid back than my usual early 20th century jazz but it will for sure be getting played again!
Any other recommendations greatly appreciated.

Gordon - have you tried E.S.T? Superb modern European Jazz that you can try out on Spotify. Have a look at the albums
From Gagarins Point of View and Seven Days of Falling to start with but they are all good. They really reward repeated listening.

This Spotify is so good. Now having a listen to John Fahey and sampling through the album. Sounds very interesting.

Excellent, cheers, I'll look into it when I go shopping tommorow (I'm resisting Spotify but I suspect that resistance is futile).
