Stratovarius - Polaris

Finnish power/symphonic metal. Soaring vocals, layers of keyboards and chunky guitar. Most pleasant.

Excellent, cheers, I'll look into it when I go shopping tommorow (I'm resisting Spotify but I suspect that resistance is useless).

If they do not have the two I mentioned then Viaticum and Tuesday Wonderland will do you well also. Do not buy Leucocyte as this is not the right place to start - a jamming session with fine moments but not their best but unfortunately their last.

I would not resist Spotify as I find it really helps me try out new stuff but it also helps me decide not to buy an album and that my money could be spent elsewhere. It is a really good and useful resource with an amazing amount of music.

Hold that thought. I have just popped next door (barn conversions) too see my sister. She has 4 or 5 160gb ipods (she collects cds like I collect vinyl). She has an ipod for pop, one for classical, one for jazz, etc and yes she is a geek but she has some E.S.T...

BTW-she is listening to...

...advance promo copy.

So Gordon - great to have so much music so close. You have mentioned some of your sister's music a few times now. She seems to have good taste.

So what E.S.T has she got?

How is the new Reader?

My sister and I are the perfect opposites, she is as passionate about next years music as I am about last centuries music. She collects cds with a zeal that only sibling rivalry can generate! She is crazy about Linn and FLAC and ipod and I am crazy about Naim & vinyl and valves.

E.S.T details coming up, she is MAC and I am Windows.

As to the Reader girl, I swear she was doing a Fleetwood Mac cover?

Strong associations indeed!!

Presence is the one LZ album which I really struggled to warm to. When you read about what was going on in their lives at the time that kinda makes some sense!!

Still some amazing tracks to be found, just not in the least bit a comfortable listen all the way through.

Dean....
Dean good album.
I dont have a copy YET.
Stu

Having to restrain myself here Stuart, no it is not a good album. IT IS A GREAT ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sits in a unique place (I would suggest) it has has a fresh techno feel of the early 980's, driving rhythms, but strong songs with an indie feel behind them.

Lyrically it is one of my very favourite albums, stream of consciousness lyrics (sadly) observed through Karl Hyde's alcoholism of the early 90's.

From 'Dirty Epic'
"with a smell of sugar, and a velvet tongue, and designer voodoo
and I got phone sex to see me through the emptiness in my 501s"

Not only that, but artwork by Tomato (who Karl Hyde and Rick Smith are part of).

Seriously 'Desert Island Discs' stuff. I have just taken a break from some live Mingus I found to put this on the computer headphones (I can't play it loud at this time, and I have to listen to 'Dirty Epic' loud right now). Remembering Karl Hyde underlit by red lights in the chorus
"and the light blinds my eyes
and I feel dirty
and the light blinds my eyes
and I feel so shaken in my faith
here comes christ on crutches
and here comes another god
here comes another god
like a buffalo thunder"

I am surprised by some of the prices I have just found on-line.
Berwick Street in Soho would be another good option.
I have it on CD, I think the vinyl is two discs maybe 45s. Worth getting on CD anyway.
