Rudy Van Gelda remasters

Posted by: JeremyB on 02 November 2008

Just got this through the mail.

This is the remaster by RVG, 24 bit transfer reissue produced by Michael Cuscuna I have been comparing to my friend's 1987 transfer by "Ron McMaster" (is that really a person?Smile) also produced by Michael Cuscuna.

Apart from the fact that the remaster is much louder and compressed, I was staggered at the difference. Stanley Turrentine's sax is so important to many tracks and drives the rhythm as much as the rhythm section itself but it has lost much of its expressive qualities, almost like it's been added on top in the new version. Everyone seems to be playing in isolation and the drums are so much louder in the mix I can't believe this was all done with only a 2 track master, that is quite an achievement. Even the organ has lost much of it's "watery" quality. There's just no space left, no exquisite pauses and dynamics and most of the texture is all gone. To make everything worse the noise floor even sounds way higher. Did anyone else notice this? What's the story?

Jeremy,

The RVG remasters seem to have a mixed reputation amongst audiophiles.

Here are a couple of threads that might be of some interest to you.

There are a couple of Blue Note series being released at present. All remastered by Steve Hoffman and they sound fantastic.

The first on Analogue Productions is to be released on both vinyl and at some point SACD

The second on Music Matters is Vinyl only. The quality of the packaging is phenomenal and the vinyl ain't bad either.

Worth checking out if you want to try Blue Note at its best.

I can't say that I like the RVG remasters (I have several). As Jeremey noted, they are suspiciously loud and, to my ears, sound rather shut in compared to other RVG recordings I have on earlier (pre 1997) CD's.

Not recomended.

The music is very good, most of the times. But you already knew that...

RVG to me always had pluses and minuses--good horn sound, very poor recessed piano sound, whether in the originals or remasters. The music is so great, however, that one has to accept the results. Try, for example, the recent RVG edition of Grachan Moncur"s Evolution CD--one of the best of the mid 60's dates with great compositions and spectacular solos by Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, and Bobby Hutcherson. No piano on this date, just great vibes by Hutcherson.....

Most of Rudy Van Gelder's work is absolutely superb whether remastered or not IMHO.

Unbelievable that it is 50 years old in some cases.
