Half Man Half Biscuit

On the off-chance that anybody else cares about Britain greatest band, you'll find MP3s of the recent HMHB session from Andy Kershaw's Radio 3 program at
http://www.hmhb.co.uk/kershawIt contains songs from the new album and a few old favourites and some chat with Kershaw where Nigel shows of his knowledge of Thomas Hardy and Kershaw claims they are "the most complete and authentic British folk group since The Clash"
Unfortuantely doesn't include the wonderful "She in Broadstairs" which is arguably the best ever song about the town in Kent and certainly a lot funnier than "She's In Parties" ("I'm from Another Planet, She's from the Isle of Thanet").

Iused to have an album of theirs until someone borrowed it permanently. I think it was Basck in the DHSS containing the immortal 'Seal Clubbing', 'I hate Nerys Hughes -from the heart' and 'Why do 99% of Gargoyles look like Bob Todd'
So thanks for the info Matthew I must chase them up (see Also Padded Cell Coincidence Thread'

I've been looking for their stuff over here in Canuckland, with virtually no success. Everything would be an import, consequently costing 20 pounds or more.

Try Pink Moon
http://www.pink-moon.freeserve.co.uk - I used to work there. Andy can easily get hold of any new HMHB stuff straight from the source, and probably have access to pretty much anything on vinyl too. I’m sure he will do you a good deal, and he will certainly ship anywhere in the world (mention I sent you). I’m off to see The Fall with him tomorrow, it being his birthday and all…

Its just about impossible to imagine a more parochially English band than Half Man Half Biscuit and also one whose style of music could be more at odds with what I understand to be your tastes.
But if after listneing to those MP3s you are still interested in a some punk-ish skiffle full of jokes you won't understand drop me a line and I'll send you a compilation CD with a view to a future purchase. If you start a Biccies cell in Toronto I will be seriously impressed...

Outside Goldsmith's coughing up blood,
Turner Prize judge gasps, "Christ that's good".
Leave it as it is and you'll win first place
We'll call it "A Full Shift at the Coalface"
Oh you are neither a Stuckist or a YBA
And you are no longer a Miner, as of today.

What a good start to a Monday morning, I was given a temporary reprieve on the office internet connection, prior to office closure and I so got introduced to The Downliners and then Half Man Half Biscuit.
They (HMHB) remind me of some of the sessions I used to listen to on John Peel in the early 70’s.
I was listening to some of the other Andy Kershaw sessions last Friday on
www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/world/akinsession.shtml; I think I am going to have to get a better internet connection at home now.

I've sent you a message.
Tony, if everything works out and I fall in love with them, then I'll give your friend a buzz.

I also have been unable to find anything other than "Trouble over Bridgewater" at $29.
This confirms my suspicion that many of the edgy, raw U.K. rockers can't be heard off of the Isles. Someone here recommended to me several interesting-sounding U.K. acts recently; I couldn't find a single one in the U.S.
If the U.K. independents are alive (and I'm guessing they may not be), they've got to solve this distribution issue.
A happy recent exception is:
Mclusky: Mclusky Do Dallas This is a terrific record: like an edgy Frank Black at his angry best, backed by Steve Albini at the helm. Try it and tell me it doesn't sound like a live show on your hifi.

I had a word with Andy (Pink Moon Records) about this over the weekend and he will get any HMHB CD to anywhere in the world for well under that price... drop him a email. If you mention me you will get a small discount!
Tony.
PS The Fall were great - more like Mark E Smith with a backing band who sounded like The Fall, but who cares...
