Mains plugs

Posted by: pjl on 29 March 2008

Does anyone know what is the official 'best' sounding mains plug according to Naim? They seem to use a mixture of Crabtree and MK Safety plug. What about the MK Toughplug? Perhaps Adam would care to comment. Thanks.

The one that comes with the Powerline....

Yes Nigel, I was just waiting for someone to say that! I wonder if Naim will ever sell it seperately? Incidentally, I have a powerline on order. I only have a single gang mains socket next to my system so I will probably have to plug the powerline into some kind of block with the rest of the equipment using standard mains leads into the block. The alternative is to replace the single mains socket with a double and plug the powerline into one side and a Hydra or similar into the other. Would a double socket preserve the star earthing? Also I remember from years ago that double sockets were frowned upon by audiophiles for not giving as good a connection as singles. Any comment anyone?

Hi Peter,

Not sure about single vs double. However my local delaer says that if you do use a double, use the right hand side socket. It is supposed to have a better earth than the left.

We liked the Crabtree - it became unavailable - we use the MK.

Toughplug - don't know. We don't use it - which might indicate something.

T'is weird, Crabtree still offer their round pin plugs, but have deleted the standard 13amp square pin plug. Puzzler that one.

I is confuddled Adam. Confused

I've read through the link you gave me, but nothing points to why Crabtree have deleted the standard 13amp plug, but kept the 5amp round pin on their catalogue.

Check where the earth is and do some listening tests. The MK double unswitched sockets I have in the shop sound marginally better on the left hand side, so this may vary depending on manufacturer.

MK Safetyplug, apparently there were quality control issues with them once upon a time, perhaps that is why Naim used to favour the Crabtree. But the way they are designed would seem to me to be superior to the toughplug which uses the standard screw in a hole arrangement!

Don't be tempted by these silly inline plugs sold by the likes of a certain RA, and several copy cats. They're actually a clipsal weatherproof plug, and their only real merit as a hi-fi type plug (IMHO) is that you can get 6 guage cable into them if you really think your power amp is going to draw 75Amps for a prolonged period of time!!!

Good old Crabtree.

What i like about crabtree plugs is - you can sloppily lay the plug on the floor when unplugging without the fuse working it's way loose from the slightest jolt.

Thanks for the information Adam and to everyone else for their interesting comments. At the risk of becoming obsessive can anyone comment on whether a double socket preserves the star earthing between two components plugged into both sides?

Hi PJL,

To make things easier,(from my experience) get a crabtree plug and socket, plug it in sit back and enjoy, end of.
