What happened to HiFi Review ?

Posted by: Ancient Mariner on 10 August 2003

I know not all HiFi magazines are regarded as great, and I also know they offer very different opinions of what think is good or bad.

But there used to be a HiFi magazine that was out a while ago, I think it was called "HiFi review". They had....well lets say quite a biased view towards anything with either a Naim or Linn badge on it. They also liked other stuff too, like Rega, Pink Triangle, Onix, bla bla bla.

I think the last copy of the magazine I had was about 1994, after then it was some time.....actualy it was a very long time since I bought HiFi magazines again.

What happened to HiFi Review ?, it was for me the best HiFi magazine out there at the time. The last time I had this magazine a 72/HiCap/250 was Naims best setup, well that does not include changing the 250 for 135's.

They also thought the SBL and the Isobarik where the best speakers they had ever heard, and who would argue against it at the time. Does anyone remember the magazine ? IMHO it was miles better than any HiFi mag today.

IIRC HiFi World (and computer audio) rose from it's ash's. Apparently the present editor, David Price wanted to do an interveiw eith Chris Frankland but the guy is strictly incomudicado.

Yep..HiFi review is long gone...and yes great days when it was a Nac72/HiCap/250..... I started with a 72/HiCap/140 and then made it to a 250..all driven by the Lp12...great!!!

Try Hi-Fi+ mag instead

FWIW here are some images to play with..... Big Grin

Was there ever a Feb 91 issue? If there was, can I beg, borrow or buy it please?

The editorial in issue one makes no mention at all of 'Review........ even though it's virtually the same staff minus Chris and Nicola Frankland!

Here's my last copy;

And the first copy;

There's quite a lot oof vinyl stuff in the current issue of Hi-Fi World, with a few mentions of "Christ" Frankland's other mag, "The Flat Response".

There is also a letter from a reader enquiring about buying an LP12 second hand. As usual, the reply from David Price is that the LP12 is an old design, very off the pace now, etc etc, blah blah, and the reader should try a Michell Gyrodec (blah blah). Mr Price then goes on to say that the LP12 "cannot be bettered in [its] musicality - it swings more than Austin Powers on his stag night!"

Well, why else would one buy a hi-fi compenent, except for its musicaility? Perhaps I'm just being dense... Roll Eyes

PS - he does sseem to like the NAP250 though...

Yeah, its a shame the magazine folded, I really enjoyed reading it much more than any other magazine.

At the moment the only magazine I buy is HiFi News.

There was a link here months ago to someone who's put all his old Flat Responses (HFR's predecessor) online. Of course, I've lost the link.

When HFR went under, all subscribers were sent claim forms for money still owed. If I were Chris Frankland, I believe I would have disappeared too.

Malcolm Steward also started out there, as did Ian Banks of Inspector Rebus fame.

So I guess this week's challenge is to deduce who 'Armered' 'was' back in the 80s...
