Castle winchester and Naim

Posted by: terryborth on 03 June 2003

I have Castle winchesters.
I have just purchased a CD3.5 and high cap (used of course).
I am now interested in purchasing a Naim preamp and amplifier.
I listen to large classical music (i.e. Wagner).
Please advise what pre amp amp I should be looking at.

Sincerely

Hi Terry,

Welcome to the forum.

May I just ask what your budget is?

If purchasing used, you may be able to fit a 82/250 combo in that budget. If you couldn't, find an 82 and perhaps go to a 180 for the amp. If you want to buy new, you should consider trying to stretch the budget to fit a 202/200 combo (it probably would run about $5k if you hold off on the NA PSC for the preamp until funds are replenished). Good luck. MBM

$3-4K is a little low for an 82/250 - to get any sound, you'll need a hicap and some NACA5, too. And you have to find a seller who knows enough to include the interconnects. Besides, I suspect it's not very wise to run a thoroughbred like the 82 without a good PSU (at least a hicap), even with a poweramp that supplies power.

A 72/hi/250 or 102/NAPSC/hi/250 should come in under $4k.

How big is your room? How loud do you play music? Smaller room, moderate levels should make a 72/hi/140 a good choice at $2-2.5K, although it doesn't have a remote control.

Good hunting!
