Verve remixed

Not the band the label.

Dorfmeister, Thievery Corperation and others let loose on Astrid Gilberto, Sahah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billy Holliday etc.

Three 180g slabs, two tracks a side. A really great set of reworked songs which stand up by themselves but at the same time do no disservice to the originals.

The reworked 'you should see' by Ella is sublime - upon listening it's difficult to believe that the best part of half a century separates the sound of the voice to those of most of bass, keyboard and drum parts. Nice packaging and excellent sound on LP. All in all a very worthwhile purchase IMO.

This one hit the doormat a couple of days ago after I read the review in HiFi+.

I love it, I know very little about old Jazz, but these are tracks that I have heard before once or twice, the modern treatment does them justice unlike some of the rubish you get in the charts these days.

I always skip the first track. I mean, Ella, Billie, Sassy, Astrud, Dinah ... and Willie Bobo!

This is shamelessly aimed at the punter who is getting a little long in the tooth for anything too challenging. I love it! It was on heavy rotation at Archway Towers a few months ago and since burning a copy for the folk downstairs I'm hearing it all over again. I prefer the reworkings of the less famous tracks (I do like the Willie Bobo), remixing 'Strange Fruit' is like doodling over a Goya etching.

unmixed
I've had the unmixed version for about a year, and usually skip the first and last track. The rest is an amazing selection. I'm tempted by the remixed version on vinyl - is it 45 or 33? I'm guessing at 2 tracks/side it's 45, which is a pity (I'm using a Valhalla ps).

cheers,

Dan
