Anyone familiar with Nautilus label LP's please?
Posted by: Voltaire on 28 October 2008
The time has come to replace one of my all time favorite albums on vinyl from 1976 and I stumbled across a copy which is...
Anyone have anything on this label in their collection?
It is considerably more expensive than the original issue and I'm hoping that someone here can advise me if it might be worth it?
As always, any help much appreicated.

As JN had spoken well of it, I picked up a Nautilus pressing of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. It cost me about $10, delivered, from USA to UK. So this may have been a bargain by anyone's standards! I found it musical and full of information which I had never heard on my original UK pressing LP, without sounding forced.

Which 1976 lp are you considering?

I have a few half speed masters, some from nautilus (heart/dreamboat annie) and MCA, CBS (Tom Petty, Boz Scaggs, Elvis Costello)
Cant say I can tell the difference.
There are some mixed opinions out there. There is a good site discussing some of this at dccblowout dot com.

The album in question is indeed...
Heart-Dreamboat Annie

but its £25.00 + p&p.
Don't get me wrong, I love the album and will pay happily if it's worth it, I'm just not convinced?
Cheers for the replies.

Not worth it if you ask me...there are early issue hot stamper pressings that are better sounding to my ear

Hi John,
You must be a true believer in the Tom Port spiel. I have dealt with him in the past and my transactions were always fair and professional, but I think with the hot stampers things get a little suspect.
Regards

Matt -
There are very few things I believe in these days (!!!) but I do tend to go all mushy around audiophile stuff. But not this one, oddly. ON the other hand I did say "to my ear" and again, my ears tell me that there are alot of plain old original pressings that sound better than the so called "spruced up" Mofi's or what not. I have never really heard a half speeder that sounded better. Dont mean I didnt buy em!
But I agree - those hot stamper prices are ridiculous!!! I cant believe anyone would go for that ($400 for some writing in the wax)
What titles did you get from him? And my apologies, no offense if you paid $400. If I had the scratch I would probably give it a spin too!

Hi John,
I never bought any "hot stampers" from him. My purchases were all new releases. It has been a few years since I have used Better Records but I remember buying some Smashing Pumpkins and a Quiexx Joni Mitchell LP. I don't remember paying over 20 bucks a title.
Do you ever get to Amoeba Records in Berkely? A couple of my friends have been there and can't say enough good things about the store. I need to make a trip there.
Regards

Matt:
That guy has brass attachments. I wish I could sell my good sounding records for 100 times the price of a regular one.
May be I should try it. Does he sell a lot of them? How?

Hi Jay:
I believe that the PT Barnum qoute about one being born every minute may apply.
Have you stopped by Accent recently? Now that the price is back under $6k you can buy a couple of Supercaps, right?
Regards

I do get there often, as it is only 5 minutes away. I am friends with one of the owners, but that does not get me any special viewings or first picks, sadly. I think it is a great store for CDs. But as far as vinyl goes, there is a ton of it, but not much I find interesting. Alot of dollar bin stuff and plenty of new releases and reissues. Then there is expensive stuff up on the wall. I am looking for original issue, moderately priced vinyl and there is not enough of that for my taste. There is not enough turnover and a pretty stale new arrival bin. But it is alot of fun. I think I am just jaded, or maybe I just have all the vinyl I need (is that possible?!?!?!) But I do go to both Amoeba Berkeley, SF and LA all the time. You do need to make a trip there. Their new and used CD section is truly outrageous.

Sounds good! Let me know when they are installed and I will take you up on your invitation to listen to your system. I'm sure that your kids won't mind not going to college.
