HDX al*** lookup
Posted by: Jonn on 07 March 2010
I've a problem with recent CD rips on the HDX. Album details are not being found on AMG or FreeDB. I've checked and the internet connection is OK. It's happening on all CDs I've tried recently so it's not because they don't exist on AMG or FreeDB. Also it was finding album details before.
Only change I've made recently is to add a NAS to the network.
Any suggestions on what may be the cause and how to fix it?

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting the 1.5a discs from my dealer on Thursday. Is the software update likely to fix the problem or won't it make any difference?
If it may fix the problem I will try it first and repost if the problem persists. What do you suggest?
Regards
Jon

Hi Jon,
I have your mail. I hope the below description isn't either too technical, or condescending etc, but it should cover this for future reference and is good practice anyhow.
Given the settings you sent, there are two things to note:
1) We don't generally recommend static IP's for the NSxxxx series (unless they are in a NaimNet system) as some models have a second network device on board (HDX/NS03 front panel) and unless you are proficient in setting up a LAN with static IP's (you may well be!), the unit can get in to various states requiring a call to dealers/factory. For the least pain if you do insist on using static modes, you'll need to:
a) limit the DHCP pool so that it doesn't clash with the devices on static addresses. For instance:
DHCP range = 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.200 (this means anything above 200 to 253 can be used for a static IP's safely).
We have seen some setups where units were set statically inside the DHCP range, the router got rebooted for whatever reason and lost it's ARP table. Then some other device came along and asked for the same address. Because the router had no knowledge of this address being in use, it gave the same address out to another device. Bottom line potential IP address clash.
I know the above will raise eyebrows from certain members who are proficient with the DHCP protocol - as technically this should not happen, all I can say is I have seen at least one Wireshark packet capture to this effect.
b) If you must use static IP's, make sure you keep track of your devices set to static addresses. i.e. make sure if you add another static address, you don't use one already in use by another static device.
c) Some routers (for instance Netgear), allow you to reserve a DHCP address for devices on the network, so that you can leave all of your devices on DHCP and let the router keep track of who permanently has what address, regardless of rebooting etc.
2) DNS server. I think the issue here is with this. Whilst the DNS address you gave is probably a valid address and will work, it's not normally set in this way, i.e. using a WAN DNS address. There is no garuantee that the DNS server that this unit is set to use is in use all the time.
Personally I would have set the DNS to the same as the LAN Default Gateway address (in your case 192.168.1.1) and then let the router do all the DNS forwarding etc (assuming your router has a DNS server - which they normally do).
More info can be found in the HDX Public section here:

Hope this helps...
PS Answer to your 1.5 question. Try the above first and then apply 1.5a update

AV,
Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Well it is all a bit technical for me but I suppose I should learn. If I've read correctly, the most likely way to retrieve the album details online look-up function is to change the DNS server address to the same as the Gateway address.
Is the following the correct procedure:
1. Install the Naim IP Tool Application from the CD.
2. Select Naim Set IP tool
3. Select DHCP option
4. Change DNS address to Gateway address (leave other settings as they are)
5 Select Update and OK to confirm.

Bottom line yes. I was really trying to cover the issue of using static IP for everyone's benefit, given we have had some issues in the past.
you'll only need to select "Dynamic Address (Use DHCP)" in SETIP Tool. The unit should work the rest (DNS/Gateway etc) out for itself.
Then rip a disc and see if cover art is then present on the new album.

AV@naim,
Just done this. Seemed to work OK and my HDX rebooted but it's been stuck in "starting" mode for the last half hour. Any suggestions?

Hi John,
Do you have a monitor that you can plug into the back of the unit and then reboot it? If so can you email me at phil.harris@naimnet.com and let me know what you're getting on that output.
Cheers
Phil
