In Praise of Speech Debelle

Posted by: girlfriend in a coma on 20 September 2009

I enjoy keeping my ears & mind open to new music.
I've found The Mercury Music Prize to be a good source of 'new to me' acts.
In fact it has introduced me to music that is now some of my all time favourites.

I got a few records form this years short list,
& Speech Debelle's 'Speech Therapy' has quickly become the current disk I can't stop playing.
Musically it has many influences, including jazz & hip hop, but it sounds completely new to me.

The music & lyrics are wonderfully inventive, & I find it an incredibly positive & uplifting listen.
It's an emotional album: SB clearly writes from the heart & painful personal experience.
In summary I would describe this music as fresh & real.
If that might be to your taste I can't recommend the record enough.
There's lots of free to listen tracks on the SB website.

One day I know that it
It will get better music is healing
I love the feeling
One day all people will be all equal
Until that day comes I'll just be singing my song

Along with Simon's earlier post, you have piqued my interest - it is on the list, for sometime soon.

Thanks

Another one on the list!

My intentions were good, but I too have an ever growing list.
I empathise with your sinking feeling & apologise for being part of the problem Jeff! Red Face

No need for apology, thanks for supporting Simon's enthusiasm on another thread, but it will be a few weeks before I can indulge again.

I heard the album last week, and it's very well done, and though I used to listen to loads of hip hop, it's probably not really my thing these days. However, while I was a little dismissive when it got a Mercury nomination, I can see why it won now.

I read an interview with her a while ago where she said she's a big Tupac fan - it definitely shows in her inventive lyrics. I can't quite remember the chorus to "Finish This Album" (something about edges and veges and fruit) but it's great.

A welcome boost for her record label, Ninja Tune / Big Dada, too.
