Help! Problem with DVD connection to old telly

Posted by: syd on 02 February 2004

Hi All I hope you can help me with my problem. I bought a cheapo ALBA DVD45 player for £29.99 to connect to my very aged Sony TV. The outputs on the DVD are either Composite or Scart but the input on TV is standard RF coaxial aerial socket only. So I've connected it via my Pace Telewest box using a Scart Cable. I have had no problem playing the Telewest Cable through my TV on its RF output but I can't get anything on screen when trying to set up TV for the DVD. Is it a possible faulty DVD player or is the TV not compatible with DVD playback. The Composite outputs may be OK but as neither the TV nor the Cable box have inputs for this I can't tell. I have tried a couple of Scart cables in case it was this as the Telewest box came with two. I used to rent a 32" Sony with all the connectors but gave it up recently as I was watching very little TV.

Your'e help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think I am correct in the following:

Your telewest box has an RF output which mates with the normal coaxial RF input found on the back of TV's and VCr's. This works because the signal is exactly that (RF!).
Your DVD does not output an RF signal thru' any of it's outlets. What you need is a converter box which will take a SCART IN and convert it to RF out. Basically it's a sign of the times, RF is dying as an input standard on TV's

Try searching on this site:

Hope this helps

As Geoff adviced, buy a converter AKA modulator. Or if you have a VCR, you can try the SCART input of the VCR and the RF output. The VCR has to be in record mode with a paused or fake cassette.

I use a similar setup for playing films around the house via my VCR RF out (most of my extra TV's only have an old RF input) but I do not have to have the VCR in "record mode" I simply select AV as the input on the VCR and it outputs through it's RF socket perfectly.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Thanks for all the advice lads but it has left me with a few more questions

Geoff, had a look at the lektropaks site and they do indeed do an RF modulator but it's 50 quid. Somehow this defeats the purpose of buying a cheapo DVD. Do other DVD players have an RF output or has this standard died the death.

Now the cable box has Scart in and a Scart out (labeled VCR and TV respactively) but does this mean that it is just a pass through and no conversion is carried out in it as it has a RF output that I use just now.

I have an old Panasonic VCR that I'll try out to see if this a solution.

Lastly but not leastly as it is a cheapo DVD player there isn't even a simple display and therefore I don't know if it is working or not. When I power on there is just a small red indicator light. They tray opens and I can load a disc but after that there is no indication as to whether or not it recognises it. I beleive you need the OSD to be able to play even audio CDs. Is this correct.

Incidentally I only bought it as friends lend me DVDs of films and concerts etc and I was getting a bit cheesed of playing them through the PC. I would prefer to sit and watch them in the comfort of a sofa in the living room.

I'm now going to try out the old Panasonic VCR to see if it helps. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Quick update

Tried connecting the DVD through the old VCR. Success. DVD works fine and I've been watching REM's Road Movie. Sounds crap through the telly but I will get out some old cables and play it through the Naims and Briks. Should be interesting.

Only one problem left is I will have to keep switching back and forth at the RF input on the telly. Anyone got any suggestions?

Switching back and forth at the TV RF input?
Doesn't your Video have an RF input?
If so, you plug aerial into VCR RF in and then VCR RF out to TV aerial in.

I have in fact just tried this and it works but!!!! the quality was a lot worse. I think there are just to many interconections in the way. I can live with it in the meantime as I dont watch that much telly/cable anyway. I watched Starship Troopers DVD earlier and at the flip over point I got out an old 5mtr interconnect and connected the DVD to my sistem. Bloody hell Briks would make an amazing Home cinema speaker setup. Big Grin. Had only ever heard it before through my PC souncard and cheapo sub and speaker set up. What A difference. Tried it with a CD but it lasted about 5 minutes. A really tuneless mess. I don't think a months burn in would make a lot of difference either. Smile. Still you pays your money....

Thanks again for all the help.

Urm, with aerial -> VCR -> TV (all coaxial) there should be no drop in quality in TV picture - I've never had a problem with this with my Sony telly and at least 8 VHS machines (please don't ask why so many videos in 7 years - it's not pretty!).

My mate runs a DVD into a VHS machine, and selects "Aux" on the video - no messing around with record needed on many videos. It works fine - just pipe the sound through the hifi Smile
